When we want to express a wish/desire in English for a situation to be different to what it actually is then it is very common to use the verb “to wish”. This verb can be used in different tenses depending on what we desire or desired to be different.

How to Use Wish in English Grammar
Wish + Past Simple
To express that we want a situation in the present (or future) to be different.
Examples:
- (I don’t eat more vegetables.)
- He wishes he had a new house. (He does not have a new house.)
- They wish it was August. (It isn’t August.)
- I wish I had a bigger car. (Because my car is too small).
- I wish it was the summer holidays (but it isn’t – I’m still at school).
Wish + Past Continuous
To express that we want to be doing a different activity in the present (or the future).
Examples:
- I wish I was playing badminton now. (I’m studying English.)
- I wish it weren’t raining now. (It is raining now.)
- I wish you were coming to my party next week. (You are not coming to my party next week.)
Wish + Past Perfect
This wish grammar structure expresses regret. This means we want to be able to change a situation in the past.
Wish sentences:
- They wish they hadn’t lost the photo. It was a really good one. (They lost the photo.)
- I wish I hadn’t done it. (I did it.)
- He wishes he had studied more for their exam. (They didn’t study more for their exam.)
- He wishes he had studied harder when he was at school. (He didn’t study hard enough – perhaps if he had studied harder he would have gone to university.)
- They wish they hadn’t scored that goal! (They scored a goal and as a result they probably won’t win the match).
Wish + Would
To express that we want something to happen.
Examples:
- I wish my car would start. (I can’t make it start and I want it to start).
- I wish the lesson would end. (I want it to end).
To express that we want someone to start doing something they do not do.
Example:
- I wish you’d listen to me!
To express that we want someone to stop doing something which annoys us.
Examples:
- I wish you wouldn’t borrow my clothes!
- I wish my mum wouldn’t phone me every five minutes!
Wish + To Infinitive
We can also use “wish” to express “want” in a formal situation, by using wish + to infinitive.
Example:
- I wish to make a complaint and would like to see the manager.
Note: We can use subject + wish + someone as a fixed expression to congratulate them or desire them well.
Wish sentences examples:
- We wish you a Merry Christmas.
- We wish you a Happy Birthday.
- I wish her luck in her new career.
- She wishes her sister the best of happiness.

I Wish/ If Only
If only means I wish. We use I wish… and If only… when we regret something or when we would like something to be different than the way it is. If only is usually stronger than I wish.
Wish sentences:
- I wish I could fly. = If only I could fly.
- I wish they would stop fighting. = If only they would stop fighting.
After I wish and If only we can say were/weren’t instead of was/wasn’t.
Example:
- I wish I was home now. /I wish I were home now.

1. ใช้ wish บอกความต้องการ
บอกความต้องการของบุคคล ความหมายคล้าย want นั่นแหละ ประโยคจะอยู่ในรูป
wish to… / wish for somthing
- I wish to see the manager.
ฉันอยากพบผู้จัดการ - I wish to go to the beach next week.
ฉันอยากไปชายทะเลสัปดาห์หน้า - He wishes to date you.
เขาอยากจะออกเดทกับเธอ - I don’t wish to bother you, but only you can help me.
ฉันไม่อยากรบกวนเธอเลย แต่เธอเท่านั้นที่ช่วยฉันได้
- I wish for money.
ฉันอยากได้เงิน - I wish for a big house.
ฉันอยากได้บ้านหลังใหญ่

3.ใช้ wish แสดงความปรารถนา
ความปรารถนา ที่นี้คือปรารถนาที่จะเปลี่ยนแปลงสภาพที่เป็นอยู่ปัจจุบัน หรือเหตุการณ์ที่ผ่านมาแล้วในอดีตก็ได้ หลักภาษาเรียก ประโยค subjuctive
การใช้ wish ในรูปแบบ subjuctive สามารถใช้กับ ความหมายปัจจบัน หรือความหมายในอดีตก็ได้

ถึงแม้รูปของกริยาจะอยู่ในรูปอดีต แต่ความหมาย จะหมายถึงปัจจุบัน ณ ตอนนี้นะครับ หมายความว่า ปัจจุบันเราเป็นอย่างหนึ่ง แต่เราปรารถนาที่จะเปลี่ยนให้เป็นแบบหนึ่ง
- I wish (that) I were rich.
ฉันปรารถนาว่าฉันรวย
(ถ้าฉันรวยก็ดีอ่ะ)
ความจริงคือ จน แต่อยากเป็นคนรวย
- I wish (that) I won the lottery.

- I wish (that) I had told her the truth.

- I wish (that) I had killed that bad wolf.

คำว่า wish สามารถเอา If only มาแทนก็ได้
- If only I were rich.

I wish I wish I wish I wish I wish… Oh! It only works if you know the grammar rules! I completely forgot. So here is the complete ‘wish’.
Wish has five uses in English and today we’re going to cover them all. Are you ready? Go!
1. Wish for present or past that isn’t real.
This is the most common form of wish. It’s when we wish for a situation in the present or past to change, but we know that it can’t change because it’s impossible.
‘I wish I were taller.’ (because I am not tall) Or: ‘I wish I had eaten icecream for breakfast this morning.’ (because I didn’t eat ice cream for breakfast this morning).
I wish I were taller is an example of a present wish. It is ‘wish’ plus the past simple. We often use ‘were’ instead of ‘was’ for all pronouns because of the subjunctive. I could also say:
‘I wish I knew how to speak Chinese.’ (because I don’t know how to speak Chinese.)
I wish I had eaten icecream for breakfast this morning is an example of a past wish. This morning is a past time; we make a past wish. ‘Wish’ is followed by the past perfect, which is had plus the past participle. That indicates true past time. Did you get it?
2. Wish for an irritation that can change.
Another common form of wish is to use ‘wish’ plus would plus the bare infinitive. And this is often in regards to other people and our irritation. For example:
‘I wish you would make the bed!’
This is a present wish, but unlike the wishes I discussed before, this wish means ‘I believe you can change and something can be done’. Compare:
‘I wish you would make the bed,’ means ‘I think you can, but you don’t, so please do.
‘I wish you made the bed’ means ‘you don’t and I don’t think you ever will so…’
It is extremely uncommon to use a first person ‘I’ in this form of wish. This is because we have control over our own actions, so to say:
‘I wish I would stop talking,’ means I want to stop talking, and I believe I can stop talking, so why don’t I?’
However, in terms of an illness or an addiction, this form is fine. When I say ‘I wish I would stop smoking’ it means ‘I don’t want to smoke anymore, but I can’t stop because I’m addicted.’ Someone give me a cigarette! Did you get it?
3. Wish to want
Wish followed by the full infinitive is a formal way of saying want. It’s not very common, and only used in special circumstances, for example, when you want to make a polite formal complaint. For example: ‘I wish to see the manager.’
We can also use wish followed by ‘for’ to attach an object that you want. And this is most often used in the circumstances of magic. For example: ‘I wish for a pizza.’ Got it?
4. Wish to send ‘good vibrations’.
We can use the verb wish followed by two objects, the first of which is most often a pronoun, to send ‘good vibrations’ to somebody. This is more common than hope and it is used in fixed phrases such as:
‘I wish you luck for your exam tomorrow.’ or ‘We wish you a merry Christmas.’ Got it?
5. Wish for the future.
This is a trick, because apart from sending good vibrations, as mentioned before, we cannot use the verb ‘wish’ in this way. We need another verb, and the verb is ‘hope’. And this is usually followed by ‘will’ plus the infinitive. So, for example:
‘I hope you will pass your exam.’
