ต่อไปนี้จะขอกล่าวเชิงเปรียบเทียบการใช้ระหว่าง Present Perfect กับ Present Perfect Continuous เพื่อท่านผู้อ่านจะได้สามารถแยกแยะความแตกต่างในการใช้ได้อย่างชัดเจน โดยอาศัยรูปภาพเป็นสื่อแสดงเบื้องต้น ก่อนจะกล่าวถึงรายละเอียดต่อไป

ข้อสังเกต ในภาพซ้ายมือ และประโยค I have been cleaning my car. ท่านผู้อ่านจะสังเกตเห็นว่า คนที่พูดข้อความดังกล่าว ยังคงทำการล้างรถไม่เสร็จสิ้น ภายในมือของเขา ยังคงถือกระป๋องน้ำ ฟองน้ำ ส่วนสายยางก็ยังคงมีนํ้าไหลออกมายังไม่ปิดเพราะยังล้างไม่เสร็จ การล้างรถยังคงดำเนินต่อไปอีก จึงใช้ Present Perfect Continuous
ส่วนในภาพขวามือ และประโยค I have cleaned my car. ท่านผู้อ่านจะสังเกตเห็นว่า ผู้พูดกำลังยืนดูผลงานล้างรถของเขาที่เสร็จสิ้นแล้ว รถยนต์อยู่ในสภาพสะอาดทั้งคัน จึงใช้ Present Perfect

ต่อไปนี้ จะขอกล่าวเปรียบเทียบอย่างละเอียดในด้านการใช้ Present Perfect Continuous และ Present Perfect
1. การกระทำที่ยังไม่เสร็จ (unfinished activity) กับการกระทำที่เสร็จ สิ้นไปแล้ว (finished activity)
ตัวอย่าง
1. Ricardo has been writing a report for Janet. He is sill in the library.
ริคาร์โด้กำลังเขียนรายงานให้เจเน็ท เขายังคงอยู่ในห้องสมุด
2. Susan has written a report for Evita. She is going back home now.
ซูซานเขียนรายงานให้เอวิต้าเสร็จแล้ว ตอนนี้เธอกำลังกลับบ้าน
อธิบาย ในตัวอย่างที่ 1 เป็นการกล่าวถึงการกระทำของ Ricardo ที่ทำการเขียนรายงานให้กับเจเน็ทมาตลอด จนถึงขณะที่พูดอยู่นี้ก็ยังคงเขียนอยู่ จึงยังทำงานอยู่ในห้องสมุด ไม่ใด้ไปไหน เพราะยังเขียนรายงานไม่เสร็จ จึงใช้ Present Perfect Continuous ส่วนในตัวอย่างที่ 2 ซูซานเขียนรายงานให้เอวิต้าเสร็จแล้ว จึงเดินทางกลับบ้าน จึงใช้ Present Perfect

2. การกระทำที่ดำเนินเรื่อยมาตลอด เพิ่งจะเสร็จ (recently finished activity) กับการกระทำที่มิได้ดำเนินเรื่อยมาโดยตลอดจบสิ้นไปแล้ว แต่ยังแลเห็นผลลัพธ์อยู่
ตัวอย่าง
1. There is glass everywhere! Someone has broken the window.
มีเศษแก้วกระจายอยู่เกลื่อนกลาด มีคนทำกระจกแตก
2. The ground is very wet. It has been raining.
พื้นเปียกแฉะไปหมด ฝนตกลงมาตลอด
อธิบาย ในตัวอย่างที่ 1 เป็นการกล่าวถึงผลลัพธ์ที่ยังมีให้เห็นจากการ กระทำของคนบางคน นั่นคือ กระจกบานหนึ่งแตก เศษแก้วกระจายอยู่เกลื่อนกลาด แต่มิใช่เป็นการกระทำที่ดำเนินอย่างต่อเนื่อง จึงใช้ Present Perfect ส่วนประโยคที่ 2 สิ่งที่แลเห็นคือพื้นเปียกเฉอะแฉะมาก แสดงว่าฝนตกลงมาตลอด ถึงได้เฉอะแฉะปานนั้น เพิ่งจะหยุดไป จึงใช้ Present Perfect Continuous

3. การกระทำที่ดำเนินต่อเนื่องมายาวนาน (continuous activity) กับ การกระทำที่เสร็จสิ้นในช่วงเวลาหนึ่ง (finished activity in a period of time)
ตัวอย่าง
1. He has been typing letters all morning.
เขาพิมพ์จดหมายมาตลอดเช้า
2. He has typed four letters so far this morning.
เขาพิมพ์จดหมาย 4 ฉบับเมื่อเช้านี้
อธิบาย ในตัวอย่างที่ 1 เป็นการกล่าวกึงการกระทำของชายคนนี้ว่าพิมพ์จดหมายมาโดยตลอดหลายฉบับตลอดทั้งเช้า แสดงถึงการกระทำที่ดำเนินต่อเนื่องมายาวนาน จึงใช้ Present Perfect Continuous ส่วนในประโยคที่ 2 เป็นการกล่าวถึงการกระทำของไทยคนหนึ่งที่พิมพ์จดหมายจำนวน 4 ฉบับ เสร็จสิ้นไปแล้ว เมื่อเช้านี้ เป็นการกระทำที่เสร็จสิ้นในช่วงเวลาหนึ่ง จึงใช้ Present Perfect

4. คำกริยาที่ไม่บ่งแสดงอาการกระทำ (nonaction verbs) อาทิ like, be, know กับคำกริยาที่บ่งแสดงอาการกระทำ (action verbs) อาทิ work, experiment, install, rain, sleep, wait จากช่วงอดีตมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน
ตัวอย่าง
1. Scientists have known about genetic coding in DNA since the early 1950s..
นักวิทยาศาสตร์ได้ล่วงรู้เกี่ยวกับรหัสของยีนในดีเอ็นเอมาตั้งแต่ต้นปี 1950
2. The workers has been installing smoke detectors in all apartments.
คนงานได้ทำการติดตั้งเครื่องตรวจจับควันไฟในอาคารชุดทุกหลัง
อธิบาย ในตัวอย่างที่ 1 คำกริยา know ไม่บ่งแสดงอาการกระทำ เป็น เพียงคำที่แสดงถึงความรู้สึกเท่านั้น จึงไม่ใช้ในรูป continuous ในกรณีของตัวอย่างที่ยกมานี้มีการระบุว่า นักวิทยาศาสตร์ล่วงรู้ในเรื่องรหัสของยีนในดีเอ็นเอมาตั้งแต่ปี 1950 (since the early 1950s) จึงใช้ Present Perfect ส่วนในประโยคที่ 2 เป็นการกล่าวถึงการทำงานของคนงานที่ได้ทำการติดตั้งเครื่องตรวจจับควันไฟในอาคารชุดทุกหลัง แสดงว่าเป็นการกระทำที่ต่อเนื่องมาตั้งแต่อดีตจนถึงปัจจุบัน จนถึงขณะนี้ก็ยังทำอยู่ จึงใช้ Present Perfect Continuous
