วันนี้ผมอยากจะขอเสนอ คำศัพท์ง่ายๆในภาษาอังกฤษที่เกี่ยวกับเรื่อง เดือนในภาษาอังกฤษ (month in English/month name in English – month อ่านว่า มันธฺ ต้องให้มีเสียง th ด้วย) แน่นอนเดือนภาษาอังกฤษเป็นเรื่องที่เราทุกคนน่าจะได้เรียนกันมาแล้ว และเป็นคำที่เราใช้บ่อยไม่น้อย เช่นในเวลาที่เรา มีนัด (appointment ) หรือทำ project plan ก็ต้องระบุ วันเดือนและปีที่ project จะเริ่มและจะเสร็จ ดังนั้น เดือนภาษาอังกฤษเป็นเรื่องสำคัญที่เราควรมาทบทวนกันหน่อย
เดือนในภาษาอังกฤษทุกคนก็น่าจะรู้อยู่แล้วว่า มี 12 เดือน ใน 1 ปี (there are 12 months in a year – แธร์ อาร์ ทเวลฟ์ มั้นธฺซ์ อิน อะ เยียร์) ซึ่งเดือนทั้ง 12 พร้อมกับ ตัวย่อเดือนภาษาอังกฤษ นั้นได้แก่

คำที่เรามักใช้กับเดือนในภาษาอังกฤษ
preposition เมื่อพูดเกี่ยวกับเดือนในภาษาอังกฤษ เราก็เลี่ยงไม่ได้ที่จะต้องใช้คู่กับ preposition ซึ่งเราใช้คำกับคำว่า in, on, during, by

ถ้าใช้กับเดือนอย่างเดียวเราใช้ in เช่น
(- ผมเกิดในเดือนกันยายน)
( – เธอต้องไปที่ออสเตรเลียในเดือนมกราคม)

แต่ถ้าเมื่อใหร่มีวันเข้ามาด้วย (พร้อมกับเดือน) เราจะใช้ on แทน เช่น
Rosie’s born on January 6th.

The competition will begin on the 20th of June.

Collocation – คำที่เรามักจะใช้กับเดือน
- early – in early January ( – ต้นเดือนมกราคม)
- late – in late January (- ปลายเดือนมกราคม)
- beginning – at the beginning of January/the month (- ต้นเดือนมกราคม/ต้นเดือน)
- end – at the end of January/the month (แอท ดิ เอ็น อัฟ แจ๊นยุอะริ/เดอะมันธฺ – ปลายเดือนมกราคม/ปลายเดือน) (เราไม่ใช in the end เพราะ in the end = finally ซึ่งตรงข้ามกับ at first) นอกจากนี้ยังมีคำว่า month end มันธ์เอนด์ – สิ้นเดือน

- this – (ธีส) this January/this month – เดือนมกราคมนี้/เดือนนี้
- holiday – (ฮาละเดย์) January/February/… holidays วันหยุดในเดือนมกราคม/กุมพาพันธ์/….
- first – (เฟิร์สทฺ – อันแรก สิ่งแรก) March was originally the first month of the year in the old Roman calendar เดิมทีนั้น เดือนมีนาคมเป็นเดือนแรกของปีในปฏิทินดั้งเดิมแบบโรมัน.
- last – (แลสทฺ/ลาสทฺ – สุดท้าย) December is the last month of the year.
- following – (ฟาละวิง) in the following month ในเดือนถัดมา

ถ้าจะลดความสับสนลงโดยอ้างถึงปีนี้เราควรจะใช้ this January/February… หรือ this past January/Febuary
day-end closing, month-end closing, year-end closing หรือบางที่ก็เรียกว่า daily close/monthly close/yearly close.
สามกลุ่มคำนี้หมายถึงช่วงเวลาในการตรวจสอบหรือปิดงบทางบัญชี (close out the current posting period)
