What Is Infrastructure?

Infrastructure is the general term for the basic physical systems of a business, region, or nation. Examples of infrastructure include transportation systems, communication networks, sewage, water, and electric systems. These systems tend to be capital intensive and high-cost investments, and are vital to a country’s economic development and prosperity.

Projects related to infrastructure improvements may be funded publicly, privately, or through public-private partnerships. In economic terms, infrastructure often involves the production of public goods or production processes that support natural monopolies.

Key Takeaways

  • Infrastructure are the basic systems that undergird the structure of the economy.
  • Examples of infrastructure include transportation facilities, telecommunications networks, and water supplies.
  • Large scale infrastructure is usually produced by the public sector or publicly regulated monopolies, but at smaller scales infrastructure can often be produced by private firms or through local collective action.
  • As an investment, infrastructure tends to be less volatile than some other asset classes and is sometimes sought as an investment.

Infrastructure

Understanding Infrastructure

The term infrastructure first appeared in usage in the late 1880s. The word comes from French, with infra- meaning “below” and structure meaning “building.” Infrastructure is the foundation upon which the structure of the economy is built, often times quite literally. In 1987, a panel of the U.S. National Research Council adopted the term “public works infrastructure” to refer to functional modes including highways, airports, telecommunications, and water supplies, as well as the combined systems that these elements comprise.

Applicable to large- and small-scale organizational frameworks, infrastructure can include a variety of systems and structures as long as there are physical components required. For example, the electrical grid across a city, state or country is infrastructure based on the equipment involved and the intent to provide a service to the areas it supports. Similarly, the physical cabling and components making up the data network of a company operating within a specific location are also the infrastructure for the business in question, as they are necessary to support business operations.

Because infrastructure very often involves the production of either public goods or goods that lend themselves to production by natural monopolies, it is very typical to see public financing, control, supervision, or regulation of infrastructure. This usually takes the form of direct government production or production by a closely regulated, legally sanctioned, and often subsidized monopoly. At smaller scales, infrastructure can also often take on the characteristics of club goods or goods most readily produced by localized monopolies, and can be provided within the context of a private firm producing infrastructure for use within the firm or provided by localized arrangements of formal or informal collective action.

Types of Infrastructure

Infrastructure can be put into several different types including:

Soft Infrastructure

These types of infrastructure make up institutions that help maintain the economy. These usually require human capital and help deliver certain services to the population. Examples include the healthcare system, financial institutions, governmental systems, law enforcement, and education systems.

Hard Infrastructure

These make up the physical systems that make it necessary to run a modern, industrialized nation. Examples include roads, highways, bridges, as well as the capital/assets needed to make them operational (transit buses, vehicles, oil rigs/refineries).

Critical Infrastructure

These are assets defined by a government as being essential to the functioning of a society and economy, such as facilities for shelter and heating, telecommunication, public health, agriculture, etc. In the United States, there are agencies responsible for these critical infrastructures, such as Homeland Security (for the government and emergency services), the Department of Energy, and the Department of Transportation.

Along with the aforementioned sectors, infrastructure includes waste disposal services, such as garbage pickup and local dumps. Certain administrative functions, often covered by various government agencies, are also considered part of the infrastructure. Educational and healthcare facilities may also be included, along with specific research and development functions and necessary training facilities.

Special Considerations

IT Infrastructure

Many technical systems are often referred to as infrastructures, such as networking equipment and servers, due to the critical function they provide within specific business environments. Without the information technology (IT) infrastructure, many businesses struggle to share and move data in a way that promotes efficiency within the workplace. If IT infrastructure fails, many business functions cannot be performed.

Private Investment in Public Infrastructure

Sometimes private companies choose to invest in a country’s infrastructure development as part of a business expansion effort. For example, an energy company may build pipelines and railways in a country where it wants to refine petroleum. This investment can benefit both the company and the country.

In 2005, Skyway Concession Company entered into a 99-year lease with the City of Chicago to operate and maintain the Chicago Skyway Bridge. As part of the agreement, Skyway receives all toll and concession revenue generated by the bridge, while the city benefited from a $1.83 billion cash infusion and is no longer responsible for maintaining the bridge.

Individuals may also choose to fund improvements to certain pieces of public infrastructure. For example, an individual may fund improvements to hospitals, schools, or local law enforcement efforts.

Infrastructure as an Asset Class

Infrastructure is also an asset class that tends to be less volatile than equities over the long term and provides a higher yield. As a result, some companies and individuals like to invest in infrastructure funds for their defensive characteristics, such as funds involved in transportation or water infrastructure.

[NEW] Grammar: หลักการใช้ Verb to have | โครงสร้าง used to – NATAVIGUIDES

Verb to have หนึ่งในกริยาพื้นฐานสำคัญในภาษาอังกฤษ ที่เราจะได้เจอบ่อย ๆ แต่ก็ยังคงมีความสับสนและใช้งานผิด เพราะมีหลายความหมายทำได้หลายหน้าที่ ดังนั้นมาตีซี้กับ Verb to have กันเถอะ

รูปของ Verb to have

Subject/Tenses

Present Tenses

Past Tenses

Continuous Tenses

  I/You/We/They
  และประธานพหูพจน์อื่น ๆ

have

had

having

  He/She/it
  และประธานเอกพจน์อื่น ๆ

has

had

having

** have ในความหมายว่า “มี” เป็น Stative verbs แสดงความเป็นเจ้าของ จะใช้ใน Continuous tenses ไม่ได้ (เติม -ing ไม่ได้) แต่ถ้าในความหมายว่า “กิน” เป็น Dynamic verbs สามารถใช้ในรูป -ing ได้

Verb to have นอกจากมีความหมายว่า “มี” แล้ว ยังใช้ในความหมายอื่น ๆ เช่น “กิน” ได้ด้วย อีกทั้งจัดอยู่ในกลุ่ม Primary auxiliary verbs คือ ทำหน้าที่เป็นได้ทั้งกริยาหลักและกริยาช่วย (เช่นเดียวกับ Verb to be และ Verb to do)

หลักการใช้ Verb to have

1. Verb to have ทำหน้าที่เป็นกริยาหลัก (Main Verbs)

Verb to have เมื่อทำหน้าที่เป็นกริยาหลักจะมีความหมายว่า “มี” และ “กิน”
Has ใช้กับ He/She/it และประธานเอกพจน์อื่น ๆ
Have ใช้กับ I/You/We/They และประธานพหูพจน์อื่น ๆ
Had เป็นรูปอดีตของ Have/Has ใช้ได้กับประธานทุกตัว

Ex.1 : I have a new job. (ฉันมีงานใหม่)
Ex. 2 : The dog has a black tail. (หมามีหางสีดำ)
Ex.3 : Tom had a big house. (ทอมเคยมีบ้านหลังใหญ่)
Ex. 4 : Mom and I have dinner at 7.00 pm. (แม่และฉันกินมื้อเย็นตอนหนึ่งทุ่ม)

นอกจากนี้ have/has got ก็มีความหมายว่า “มี” เช่นเดียวกัน เพียงแต่ have/has got เป็นการพูดแบบ British English ซึ่งพบในภาษาพูดมากว่าในภาษาเขียน เช่น

I have a new job. = I have got a new job. (ฉันมีงานใหม่)
Tom has a luxury car. = Tom has got a luxury car. (ทอมมีรถหรู)

หลักการทำเป็นประโยคปฏิเสธและประโยคคำถาม
     เมื่อทำเป็นประโยคปฏิเสธหรือประโยคคำถามต้องใช้กริยาช่วย Verb to do เข้ามาช่วย **จำให้แม่น! Verb to have ที่เป็นกริยาหลักห้ามใส่ not หลัง have/has

ประโยคปฏิเสธ

I/You/We/They และประธานพหูพจน์อื่น ๆ + don’t have…
He/She/it และประธานเอกพจน์อื่น + doesn’t have…

Ex. 1 : I don’t have any time. (ฉันไม่มีเวลาเลย)
Ex. 2 : My boyfriend doesn’t have a car. (แฟนฉันไม่มีรถ)

ประโยคคำถาม

Yes/No Questions : Do + I/You/We/They และประธานพหูพจน์อื่น ๆ + have….?
                            Does + He/She/it และประธานเอกพจน์อื่น ๆ + have…?
Wh-Questions : What/When/Where/Who/How + do + I/you/we/they+ have…?
                       What/When/Where/Who/How + does + he/she/it + have…?

Ex. 1 : Do you have any good books for studying English? (คุณมีหนังสือดี ๆ สำหรับเรียนภาษาอังกฤษบ้างไหม?)
Ex. 2 : Does Nid have any brothers or sisters? (นิดมีพี่ชายน้องชายหรือพี่สาวน้องสาวบ้างไหม?)
Ex. 3 : Where do you usually have lunch? (ปกติคุณทานมื้อกลางวันที่ไหน?)

**ประธานเอกพจน์ เมื่อทำเป็นประโยคปฏิเสธใช้ doesn’t และประโยคคำถามใช้ does แล้ว ให้เปลี่ยน has กลับมาเป็น have นั่นเป็นเพราะว่า has คือรูปเติม s ของ have (ตามหลักไวยากรณ์ ใน Present Simple Tense ประธานเอกพจน์ V.1 ต้องเติม s/es เมื่อเป็นประโยคปฏิเสธหรือคำถาม กริยาจะกลับมาอยู่ในรูป V.1 ปกติ)

2. Verb to have ทำหน้าที่เป็นกริยาช่วย (Auxiliary Verbs)

2.1. เป็นกริยาช่วยใน Perfect Tense

โครงสร้างประโยค Present Perfect Tense : Subject + have/has/had + V.3…
โครงสร้างประโยค Past Perfect Tense : Subject + had + V.3…
โครงสร้างประโยค Future Perfect Tense : Subject + will have + V.3…

Ex. 1 : I have worked hard this week. (สัปดาห์นี้ฉันทำงานหนัก)
Ex. 2 : She has been a teacher for over 20 years. (เธอเป็นครูมากว่า 20 ปี)
Ex. 3 : Tom had read the book before he watched a film. (ทอมอ่านหนังสือก่อนที่เขาดูหนัง)
Ex. 4 : We will have gone when you arrive. (พวกเราคงจะไปแล้วเมื่อคุณมาถึง)

เมื่อทำเป็นประโยคปฏิเสธสามารถใส่ not ตามหลัง Verb to have ได้เลย (have not = haven’t, has not = hasn’t, had not = hadn’t) ส่วน Future Perfect Tense เปลี่ยน will have เป็น won’t have

Ex. 1 : We haven’t seen Tom. (พวกเราไม่เห็นทอม)
Ex. 2 :  She won’t have spoken to Mark. (เธอคงจะไม่พูดกับมาร์ก)

เมื่อทำเป็นประโยคคำถาม Yes/No Questions นำ Verb to have มาขึ้นต้นประโยค

Ex. 1 : Have you washed your face today? (วันนี้คุณได้ล้างหน้าหรือเปล่า?)
Ex. 2 : Has he met the manager? (เขาได้พบผู้จัดการหรือเปล่า?)

2.2. ใช้ have/has/had to ในความหมายว่า ต้อง

โครงสร้างประโยค : Subject + have/has/had to + V.1….

Ex. 1 : Nida has to do it by herself. (นิดาต้องทำมันด้วยตัวเอง)
Ex. 2 : I have to get up early. (ฉันต้องตื่นแต่เช้า)

2.3. ใช้ในประโยคที่แสดงถึงการกระทำที่ไม่ได้กระทำด้วยตัวเอง (Causative form) มี 2 ประเภท คือ

1. Have someone do something ให้ใครเป็นคนทำบางอย่างให้ผู้พูด
    โครงสร้างประโยค : Subject + have/has/had + ผู้กระทำ + V.1

Ex. 1 : I have my son wash my car. (ฉันให้ลูกชายล้างรถของฉัน)
Ex. 2 : Tom has his wife cook every day. (ทอมให้ภรรยาของเขาทำอาหารทุกวัน)
Ex. 3 : They will have the painter paint their house. (พวกเขาจะให้ช่างทาสีมาทาสีบ้านของพวกเขา)

2. Have something done ให้ใครทำบางอย่างโดยไม่ได้พูดถึงตัวผู้กระทำ
    โครงสร้างประโยค : Subject + have/has/had + สิ่งที่ถูกกระทำ + V.3

Ex. 1 : I have my hair cut every three months. (ฉันตัดผมทุกสามเดือน: คนอื่นหรือช่างตัดผมเป็นคนตัด)
Ex. 2 : He had his watch fixed. (เขาเอานาฬิกาไปซ่อมมา : คนอื่นหรือช่างเป็นคนซ่อม)

2.4. สำนวนที่ใช้ Verb to have ตามด้วย a + verb จะทำให้กริยานั้นกลายเป็นคำนาม และแปลความหมายตามคำกริยาที่ตามหลัง

Ex. 1 : I want to have a rest. (ฉันต้องการพักผ่อน)
Ex. 2 : He has a walk along the streets to kill time. (เขาเดินไปตามท้องถนนเพื่อฆ่าเวลา)

นอกจากยังมีสำนวนที่ใช้ Verb to have อีกมากมายและเราคุ้นเคยกันดีอย่าง have a good time. แปลว่า สนุก, have a nice day. ขอให้เป็นวันที่ดี, have one’s own way. แปลว่า เอาแต่ใจตัวเอง ซึ่งเราจะนำมาแนะนำกันในครั้งต่อ ๆ ไป หลังจากนี้ขอให้สนุกกับการใช้ Verb to have นะคะ

IT HAPPENED! Elon Musk FINALLY Reveals New Gigapress!

Tesla has not only revolutionized the electric vehicle, but it has revolutionized how
vehicles are made! With its Giga Presses, the company has accelerated its production
but is not done yet as it has started working on a bigger and more powerful Giga Press!
What extra capabilities does this newly improved Giga Press have?
Join us as we dive into Tesla finally testing their new Giga Press!
What is a Giga Press?
A Giga Press is one of the biggest machines in the world. They are presses used to
make components in a single large piece through die casting. To do this, they produce a
large amount of force for extrusion or injection. These machines capable of more than
5000 tons are made by an Italian company named IDRA Group, a subsidiary of LK
Tech.
And no, Tesla did not name the Giga Press, even though it sounds like a name Tesla
would come up with. IDRA did.
These machines are huge! Imagine a machine as big as your whole house! You build
your factory around them.
IDRA boasts that the Giga Press saves 40 percent on energy consumption and more
stable injection conditions for manufacturing even thin walls.
The Giga Press fits into Tesla’s car production because the EV company wants to make
some parts of its cars in a single large piece.
Many car makers use die casting for portions of the chassis that benefit from localized
stiffness, such as shock towers, but Tesla uses the Giga Press to replace the entire
front and rear sections of the chassis, which replaces multiple stampings that would
have then been fastened together.
Tesla has used the Giga Press in its production of the Model Y, with significant gains.
First, despite being massive, the Giga Press has helped Tesla save on the body shop’s
size by 30 percent! This means more production can take place in the same plant.
The Giga Press was a drastic production and design change for Tesla because instead
of managing 70 pieces of metals, it now handles a single die cast part, which is very
efficient manufacturing!
This claim was corroborated by Tesla’s official Twitter account, calling it the world’s
biggest die casting machine.
Show these tweets:
https://twitter.com/Tesla/status/1357503277722718212?s=20
https://twitter.com/Tesla/status/1357503279475920897?s=20
It would need fewer factory hands; JP Morgan claims that is 20 percent savings in labor
cost. It also means less logistics or transportation, less storage spaces, etc.
Giga Presses also improves the quality of the finished product. Since there is no
welding or riveting involved, this is a single piece; the potential misalignment problem is
nonexistent!
Joining those seventy pieces is no fun either. It involves sealing between them, and
Musk calls the job a nightmare!
Using Giga Presses lets Tesla move on to structural battery cases as it has been
planning to do for a while. He said at Tesla’s Battery Day event that Tesla had finally
figured out how to do it.
These battery packs serve as the stressed center member of the vehicle platform that
will connect the front and rear die castings. Structural batteries are the way forward for
Tesla because they are lighter and pack the cells more efficiently.
Musk calls the current way of packing battery cells a sack of potatoes that do not have
any structural value and even have to be isolated from the rest of the car and protected
from vibration and shock loads.
But the structural battery arranges the cell like a honeycomb which makes it very stiff.
According to Musk, these changes made possible by the Giga Presses decreases
manufacturing cost and complexity. It also reduces the finished car weight, a boost for
the driving range.
The Giga Presses will also make the battery packs after it has started making the front
end. When the three parts are made through die casting, Tesla will eliminate not only 70
parts but 370 parts!
Car parts are not the only things the Giga Presses will eliminate. Manufacturing robots
are going as well. Musk said making the rear end from a single cast replaced 300
robots. With the front end also coming from these presses, that is another 300 retired
robots. And that is before getting to the battery packs!
Robots are fast, no doubt. But setting them up takes time. They have to be positioned
accurately, bolted down to the factory floor securely, and tested rigorously to make sure
they all work together. They also need maintenance to retain their accuracy and speed.
So getting rid of them is a big deal.
It is also a kind of poetic justice; these robots have made humans lose their jobs, now it
is their turn to become redundant, thanks to the Giga Presses!
For context, Musk says there are 1000 robots involved in the Model 3 body line, but the
Giga Presses will help to get rid of at least 600 of them!
Before getting the Giga Presses, Tesla managed as much as they could, but Musk
knew die casting was the best way to make cars.
Musk believes other car makers will start using Giga Presses to make their cars, at least
electric car makers.
