[NEW] Indefinite Articles: A and An | a an some – NATAVIGUIDES

a an some: คุณกำลังดูกระทู้

Indefinite articles are used when we are referring to an unspecified thing or quantity. We use them when we don’t know (or don’t care) which thing we’re talking about.

Here’s a tip: Want to make sure your writing always looks great? Grammarly can save you from misspellings, grammatical and punctuation mistakes, and other writing issues on all your favorite websites.

There once was a sheep.

There once was

Since I don’t know which sheep it was—that is, I don’t know its name, where it’s from, or anything about it—I can’t say the sheep.

How to Use the Indefinite Articles A vs. An

The two indefinite articles in English are a and an. The indefinite article an is used to make pronunciation easier when reading a text aloud. The general rule is to use a when the indefinite article precedes a word beginning with a consonant sound and an when it precedes a word starting with a vowel sound.

1
Use a when the indefinite article comes before a word beginning with a consonant sound:
a toy
a book
a house

2
Use an when the indefinite article comes before a word beginning with a vowel sound:

an operation
an idea
an apple

Exceptions

It’s important to note that not all nouns that begin with a consonant begin with the consonant sound. Always trust the sound, not the letter when applying the a vs. an rule. Remember, it’s about pronunciation. Consider the examples below:

a hourglass

an hourglass

a honor

an honor

Likewise, there are some nouns beginning with a vowel that make a consonant sound. In these cases, the indefinite article a should be used:

an university

a university

an one-eyed pirate

a one-eyed pirate

Using A vs. An with Acronyms

These same rules apply to acronyms:

A Society of Writers member
was quoted in the article.

A S.O.W. member
was quoted in the article.

An S.O.W. member
was quoted in the article.

Because S sounds like it begins with a vowel (ess), an should be used in front of it.

[Update] some, any, no | a an some – NATAVIGUIDES

some, any, no

The quantifiers some, any and no are a kind of determiner.

Some is an unspecified quantity. It could be big or small, we don’t know. Normally it is “medium”.

Any is also an unspecified quantity. It refers to “one, some or all”. So it’s a quantity from 1 to infinity (∞).

No is easy! No is ZERO (0).

The general rule is that we use some and no in positive (+) sentences and any in question (?) and negative (-) sentences.

some
example situation

+
I have some money.
I have $10.

I have no money.
I have $0.

?
Do you have any money?
Do you have $1 or $10 or $1,000,000?

I don’t have any money.
I don’t have $1 and I don’t have $10 and I don’t have $1,000,000. I have $0.

Look at these examples:

  • He needs some stamps.
  • I must go home. I have some homework to do.
  • There were no stamps for the letters.
  • I have no homework to do so let’s go out.
  • Does he need any stamps?
  • Do you have any homework to do?
  • He doesn’t need any stamps.
  • I can stay. I don’t have any homework to do.

We use any in a positive sentence when the real sense is negative.

  • I refused to give them any money. (I did not give them any money)
  • She finished the test without any difficulty. (she did not have any difficulty)

Sometimes we use some in a question, when we expect a positive YES answer. (We could say that it is not a real question, because we think we know the answer already.)

  • Would you like some more tea?
  • Could I have some sugar, please?

no is always used in a positive sentence. Do not use it in a negative sentence.

  • I have no money.
  • I don’t have no money.

The determineris always used in a positive sentence. Do not use it in a negative sentence.

Nea Some Say 🎤
[Intro]
Hmm, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
[Verse 1]
I will find the time, we will find the timing
‘Cause you are on my mind, I hope that you don’t mind it
You know that I want you, you know that I want you next to me
But if you need some space I will step away
[PreChorus]
And I know it might sound stupid but for me, yea yea
I just gotta keep believing and I’ve heard
[Chorus]
Some say you will love me one day
And I will wait, I will wait to get your loving one day
Just say you will love me one day
And I will wait, I will wait to get your loving one day
[Verse 2]
I promise that I’ll try, that I will try to meet someone
And there’s so many guys, you told me I deserve someone
I wanna call you up but maybe it will only make it worse
I guess that I just don’t know what to do with myself
[PreChorus]
‘Cause I know it might sound stupid but for me, yea yea
I just gotta keep believing and I’ve heard
[Chorus]
Some say you will love me one day
And I will wait, I will wait to get your loving one day
Just say you will love me one day
And I will wait, I will wait to get your loving one day
[PostChorus]
Ohohoh, oooh
Ohohoh, ohoh
Just say you’ll love me one day
Ohohoh, oooh
Ohohoh, ohoh
Just say you’ll love me one day
[Bridge]
I’ll give you space to the moon if it’s what you need
Just say you one day will bring back yourself to me
[Chorus]
Some say you will love me one day
And I will wait, I will wait to get your loving one day
Just say you will love me one day
And I will wait, I will wait to get your loving one day
[Outro]
Ohohoh, oooh
(Just say you’ll love, just say you’ll love me one day)
Ohohoh, ohoh
Just say you’ll love me one day
Ohohoh, oooh
(Just say you’ll love, just say you’ll love me one day)
Ohohoh, ohoh
Just say you’ll love me one day

SOME and ANY in English – Grammar Lesson

The difference between SOME and ANY in English
First, we quickly look at the difference between countable and uncountable nouns. This is important to know when learning about SOME and ANY.
We show how A and AN are used with singular countable nouns and then we show how to use SOME with affirmative sentences and ANY with negative sentences (for plural countable nouns and uncountable nouns).
We look at how ANY is normally used with questions but then we go into the three main exceptions to this rule where SOME is used in questions instead of ANY.
Then we see how SOME and ANY can be used without a noun and finally there is a dialogue where you have to fill the blanks with either A, AN, SOME or ANY.
