#I14 HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN?
이전까지 현재 완료 시제와 현재 완료 진행 시제에 대해서 한 번 살펴보았습니다. 두 시제는 비슷하지만 다소 차이를 보이는 편이었는데요.
이번에는 여기에 이어지는 간단한 내용으로 “HOW LONG”이라는 표현을 “현재 완료 혹은 현재 완료 진행” 시제에 붙여서 사용하는 것에 대한 내용입니다.
“HOW LONG = 얼마나 오래…”
HOW LONG을 직역해본다면, “얼마나 오래”라는 말로 옮겨볼 수 있는데요. 특히, 과거부터 현재까지의 이어지는 연속성이 있는 것에 대해서 이야기를 할 때, 현재 완료 시제 혹은 현재 완료 진행 시제와 사용하기에 좋은 표현입니다.
교재에서는 결혼한 지 20년이 되었다는 내용을 가지고 이 표현을 소개하고 있지요.
“They have been married for 20 years.” (그들은 결혼한 지 20년째다.)
이렇게 결혼생활은 과거부터 지금까지 이어져서 내려오는 것이므로 “현재 완료” 시제와 잘 맞아떨어지는데요. 이 내용을 질문으로 만들면, “HOW LONG + 현재 완료 시제”로 만들어볼 수 있습니다. 아래와 같이 말이죠.
“How long have they been married?” (그들은 결혼 생활을 한 지 얼마나 오래되었나요?)
“They have been married for 20 years.” (그들은 결혼 생활을 한 지 20년이 되었습니다.)

“과거부터 지금까지 이어지는 어떤 것에 대한 기간을 질문할 때 사용하는 HOW LONG + 현재 완료/현재 완료 진행”
그래서, 이렇게 과거부터 현재까지 이어지는 어떤 것에 대한 것에 대해서 질문을 할 때, HOW LONG + 현재 완료/현재 완료 진행 시제를 사용해서 이야기를 할 수 있습니다.
하지만, 여기에서 주의해야할 것은 “진행 시제”로 사용할 수 없는 동사의 경우에는 “현재 완료” 시제만 조합이 가능하다는 것 정도를 생각해보면 되겠네요.

그럼 예문을 한 번 살펴보도록 하겠습니다.
“How long have you known each other?” (서로 얼마나 오랫동안 알고 지냈니?) ☞ 진행 시제로 쓰일 수 없는 경우
“How long have they had their car?” (그들은 얼마나 오랜 기간 차를 유지했니?) ☞ 진행 시제로 쓰일 수 없는 경우
“How long have you been learning English?” (영어 공부 얼마나 했니?) ☞ 진행 시제로 쓰일 수 있는 경우
“How long has it been raining?” (비가 얼마나 오래 계속 오고 있나요?) ☞ 진행 시제로 쓰일 수 있는 경우
“How long have you been driving?” (운전한 지 얼마나 오래됐나요?) ☞ 진행 시제로 쓰일 수 있는 경우
“현재 완료 시제와 현재 완료 진행 시제 모두 쓰이는 경우”
일부, 진행 시제로 쓰일 수 없는 동사를 제외하고, 현재 완료 시제와 현재 완료 진행 시제에서 의미상의 차이를 보이지 않는 경우가 있는데요. 이런 경우에는 두 가지 표현 모두 사용해도 됩니다. 의미상으로도 크게 차이가 없습니다. 느낌만 조금 다른 정도이지요.
“Julia has been living in Paris for a long time.” (줄리아는 파리에서 오랜 시간 살고 있다.)
“Julia has lived in Paris for a long time.” (줄리아는 파리에서 오래 살았다.)
“How long have you been working here?” (여기서 얼마나 오래 일하고 있나요?)
“How long have you worked here?” (여기에서 얼마나 오래 일했어요?)
“부사 ALWAYS를 조합하는 경우, 현재 완료 시제만 사용한다.”
하지만, 부사 ALWAYS를 사용하는 경우에는 위의 경우와는 달리, 현재 완료 시제만 사용합니다. 그리고 ALWAYS는 “HAVE”와 “P.P”의 사이에 들어가게 되지요. 아래와 같이 말이죠.
“I have always lived in the country.” (나는 항상 그 나라에서만 살았다.)
이 경우에는 “I have always been living…”이라는 형태로 사용할 수가 없습니다.
“SINCE / FOR과 조합하는 경우, 현재 완료 시제로 조합해서 쓴다.”
또한, 문장에서 FOR / SINCE 등의 시간과 관련된 전치사를 사용하는 경우에도 “현재 완료”시제를 사용합니다. 아래와 같이 말이죠.
FOR와 SINCE는 시간에서는 특정한 기간을 정해주는 전치사인지라, 진행형으로 사용하기에는 잘 어울리지 않아서 그런 것이 아닐까 하지요.
그래서 책에서는 “I haven’t done…”의 형태를 소개했는데요. 아래에서 예문을 살펴보도록 하겠습니다.
“I haven’t seen Tom since Monday.” (나는 톰을 월요일 이후로 보지 못했다.)
“Sue hasn’t phoned for ages.” (상당히 오랜 시간 동안 수는 전화하지 않았다.)

I am currently doing an exercicse on Present Perfect and don’t quite understand the answer given by the key. I am supposed to pick one answer from between two given; the answers are next to a photograph of two people, I think, at an airport. One of them is holding luggage and the other seems to have just come to at the airport. They are shaking hands, and have happy faces. Above them, there is a sign that says;
Now the answers to choose:
I’d pick the 1st one as the are still at the airport and the person with the luggage has been waiting there for some time. Answer number two suggests to me something more or less like; how long are you staying here, is this really what we want to know here?. Could someone please shed some light on the matter?
