Prefer, Would prefer, Would rather หมายถึง “ชอบ….มากกว่า….” หรือ “อยาก….มากกว่า….” แต่ละคำมีหลักการใช้ที่แตกต่างกันดังนี้
prefer
– prefer + something + to + something else. เป็นการบอกว่า ชอบบางสิ่งมากกว่าอีกสิ่งหนึ่ง โดยใช้ to เป็นตัวเชื่อม ในโครงสร้าง S + prefer(s) + Noun1 + to + Noun2 เช่น
I prefer tea to coffee. (ฉันชอบชามากกว่ากาแฟ)
Noun 1 = tea / Noun 2 = coffee
She prefers a fountain pen to a ball-point pen. (เธอชอบปากกาหมึกซึมมากกว่าปากกาลูกลื่น)
Noun 1 = a fountain pen / Noun 2 = a ball-point pen
– prefer + doing something to doing something else. เป็นการบอกว่า ชอบการทำอะไรมากกว่าการทำอะไรอีกอย่างหนึ่ง โดยใช้ to เป็นตัวเชื่อม ในโครงสร้าง S + prefer(s) + Gerund1 (v.ing) + to Gerund2 (v.ing) เช่น
I prefer walking to cycling. (ฉันชอบการเดินมากกว่าการขี่จักรยาน)
Athiwara prefers running to swimming. (อาทิวราห์ชอบการวิ่งมากกว่าการว่ายน้ำ)
ข้อควรจำ
1. ทั้งสองโครงสร้างนี้เป็นการใช้ prefer กับคำนาม
2. โครงสร้างที่สอง V.ing คือ Gerund (กริยาเติม ing ที่ทำหน้าที่เป็นคำนาม)
3. เชื่อมด้วย to ซึ่งหน้า to และ หลัง to จะต้องเป็นคำประเภทเดียวกัน คือ ถ้าเป็นคำนามก็ต้องเป็นคำนามทั้งสองคำ เช่น I prefer tea to coffee. หรือถ้าเป็น Gerund ก็ต้องเป็น Gerund ทั้งสองคำ เช่น I prefer walking to cycling.
4. ห้ามใช้ prefer กับ than
– prefer + to do something rather than (do) something else. เป็นการบอกว่า ชอบทำบางสิ่งมากกว่าทำอีกสิ่งหนึ่ง โดยใช้ rather than เป็นคำเชื่อม ในโครงสร้าง S + prefer + to V.1 + rather than + to V.1/noun เช่น
Nida prefers to stay here rather than to go there. (นิดาชอบอยู่ที่นี่มากกว่าไปที่นั่น)
I prefer to drive rather than travel by train. (ฉันชอบขับรถมากกว่าเดินทางโดยรถไฟ)
Children prefer to watch television rather than reading. (เด็ก ๆ ชอบดูทีวีมากกว่าการอ่านหนังสือ)
ข้อสังเกต : คำที่อยู่หน้าและหลัง rather than เป็นคำคนละประเภทกันก็ได้ เช่น Children prefer to watch television rather than reading.
would prefer
would prefer แปลว่า อยากมากกว่า ใช้ในสถานการณ์เฉพาะเจาะจงมากกว่า prefer โดย would prefer จะตามด้วย to + infinitive หรือ คำนาม ดังนี้
– would prefer ตามด้วย to infinitive (V.1) โครงสร้าง คือ S + would prefer + to infinitive (V.1) รูปย่อคือ ’d prefer + to V.1 เช่น
I would prefer to speak to you in private. (ฉันอยากพูดกับคุณเป็นการส่วนตัวมากกว่า)
I’d prefer to sit in the garden rather than watch TV. (ฉันอยากนั่งในสวนมากกว่าดูทีวี)
หรือถ้าเป็นสถานการณ์ที่เรารู้อยู่แล้ว เช่น น้องสาวชวนดูทีวี แต่เราอยากนั่งในสวนมากกว่า ก็บอกแค่ว่า I’d prefer to sit in the garden. ได้เช่นกัน
– would prefer ตามด้วยคำนาม โครงสร้างคือ S + would prefer + noun เช่น
I’d prefer fruit juice to water. (ฉันอยากน้ำผลไม้มากกว่าน้ำเปล่า)
I’d prefer playing outdoors to watching television. (ฉันอยากเล่นข้างนอกมากกว่าการดูทีวี)

ข้อสังเกต : การใช้ตัวเชื่อม to หรือ rather than ใช้หลักเดียวกับ prefer

would rather (do) = would prefer (to do) หมายถึง อยากมากกว่า แต่ would rather จะตามด้วยคำกริยาช่อง 1 โดยไม่ต้องมี to (infinitive without to) โครงสร้าง คือ S + would rather + V.1 หรือใช้ than เป็นตัวเชื่อมได้ ในโครงสร้าง S + would rather + V.1 + than + V.1 เช่น
His wife would rather rent a house. (ภรรยาของเขาอยากเช่าบ้านมากกว่า)
I’d rather go by car. (ฉันอยากไปด้วยรถยนต์มากกว่า)
I’d rather use a keyboard than write with a pen. (ฉันอยากใช้คีย์บอร์ดมากกว่าเขียนด้วยปากกา)
I’d rather walk than cycle. (ฉันอยากเดินมากกว่าขี่จักรยาน)

การทำเป็นรูปปฏิเสธเพียงแค่ใส่ not หลัง prefer / would prefer / would rather ซึ่งจะให้ความหมายว่า ไม่อยากทำ… เช่น

Rather than is used to state a preference. Because of that, it’s often used with the verb \”prefer\”. Rather than combines the two preferences into one sentence.
Instead of is used for substitution. You substitute one thing for another.
