Comparison การเปรียบเทียบ เป็นการเปรียบเทียบคุณลักษณะของคำนาม (adjective) หรือเปรียบเทียบคุณลักษณะอาการ (adverb)

การเปรียบเทียบที่เท่าเทียมกัน
(Comparison of equality)

Nipon is as tall as Dang.
A pen is as good as a pencil.
She works as carefully as he.

การเปรียบเทียบที่มากน้อยกว่ากัน
(Comparison of inequality)

Nipon is taller than Ladda.
A pen is better than a pencil.
She works more carefully than he.

การเปรียบเทียบที่แสดงความเป็นที่สุด
(Comparison of supremacy)

Nipon is the tallest of all.
The pen is the best of all (markers).
She works most carefully of all.

1) Comparison of Equality การเปรียบเทียบที่เท่าเทียมกัน
ใช้ as …………..as / the same as

as + adj/adv (ในขั้นธรรมดา) + as = เท่ากับ เหมือนกับ
์Nipon is as tall as Dang. นิพนธ์สูงเท่ากับแดง
(= Nipon is as tall as Dang is tall.)

She works as carefully as he.
(= She works as carefully as he works carefully.)

ในประโยคปฏิเสธ อาจใช้ so…………..as แทน as ……………..as (แต่ใช้ as …………as ได้เสมอ)
Nipon is not so tall as Dang. หรือ Nipon is not as tall as Dang.

the same + noun + as = เหมือนกันกับ เช่นเดียวกันกับ (หลัง the same เป็น noun)
He has the same book as mine. (เขามีหนังสือเหมือนกับของผม)
His car is the same color as yours. (รถของเขาสีเดียวกันกับรถของคุณ)

Example : as……as

เช่น 1) He is as tall as your brother.
     2) He drove his car as quickly as I did.
     3) Ladda is not as pretty as Anong.
     4) His uncle is as old as my uncle.
     5) This book is not as difficult as that one.

Example : the same as
     1) His room is in the same building as mine.
     2) They live in the same house as I.
     3) His age is the same as mine.
     4) My house is the same size as yours.
     5) This building is the same height as that one.

2) Comparison of Inequality การเปรียบเทียบที่มากน้อยกว่ากัน)
เราอาจใช้คำ adjective ระดับกว่า ได้เช่นเดียวกันกับระดับธรรมดา คือ อาจใช้ประกอบหน้าคำนาม หรือใช้หลัง Verb to be ก็ได้ เช่น
We need a better life. เราต้องการชีวิตที่ดีขึ้น (กว่าเดิม)
It is better to live here. (เป็นการดียิ่งขึ้น(กว่าเดิม)ที่จะอยู่ที่นี่

ประโยคทั้งสองข้างบนนี้ เป็นการใช้คำระดับกว่า โดยไม่มีการเปรียบเทียบให้เห็นชัดเจน ถ้าต้องการให้เห็นชัดเจน เราเปรียบเทียบของสองสิ่ง โดยใช้ คำระดับกว่า + than เช่น
์Nipon is taller than I. (นิพนธ์สูงกว่าฉัน)
= Nipon is taller than I am tall. (นิพนธ์สูงกว่าที่ฉันสูง)
Ladda works faster than we. (ลัดดาทำงานเร็วกว่าเรา)
= Ladda works faster than we work. (ลัดดาทำงานเร็วกว่าที่เราทำ)
แม้ว่าเราอาจใช้ประธานหลัง than ได้เพียงตัวเดียวลอยๆ อย่างในประโยคข้างบน แต่บางครั้งก็อาจมีความกำกวมเกดิขึ้นได้ เช่น
She loves Bill more than Tom. (หล่อนรักบิลมากกว่าทอม)
คำกำกวม คือ She loves Bill more than she loves Tom. (หล่อนรักบิลมากกว่ารักทอม)
หรือ She loves Bill more than Tom loves Bill. (หล่อนรักบิลมากกว่าที่ทอมรักบิล)
ด้วยเหตุนี้ จึงนิยมถือหลักว่า
     – ถ้าคำหลัง than เป็นผู้กระทำอาการ นิยมใช้กริยาพิเศษ (anomalous verb) ต่อท้ายคำนั้น เช่น
She loves Bill more than Tom does. = She loves Bill more than Tom loves Bill.)
She loves Bill more than we do. = She loves Bill more than we love Bill.

     – ถ้าหลัง than เป็นผู้ถูกกระทำ ใช้คำนั้นลอยๆ คำเดียวได้ เช่น
She loves Bill more than Tom. = She loves Bill more than she loves Tom.

REGULAR COMPARISON

โดยทั่วไป คำ adjective หรือ adverb มีรูปแสดงการเปรียบเทียบได้ 3 รูป หรือ 3 ระดับ ได้แก่

ระดับธรรมดา (ปกติ)
(Positive Degree)

ระดับกว่า
(Compaative Degree)

ระดับสูงสุด
(Superlative Degree)

small (เล็ก)

smaller(เล็กกว่า)

smallest (เล็กที่สุด)

large (กว้างใหญ่)

larger (กว้างใหญ่กว่า)

largest (กว้างที่สุด)

big (ใหญ่)

bigger (ใหญ่กว่า)

biggest (ใหญ่ที่สุด)

simple (ง่าย)

simpler (ง่ายกว่า)

simplest (ง่ายที่สุด)

beautiful (สวย)

more beautiful (สวยกว่า)

most beautiful (สวยที่สุด)

slowly (ช้า)

more slowly (ช้ากว่า)

most slowly (ช้าที่สุด)

                – ถ้าลงท้ายด้วย y เปลี่ยน y เป็น i แล้วเติม er , est (หน้า y ต้องไม่ใช่สระ) เช่น happy – happier – happiest (มีความสุข), silly – sillier – silliest (โง่) ยกเว้นถ้าเป็นคำ adverb ที่เกิดจากการเติม ly เข้าที่คำ adjective เติมคำ more, most เข้าข้างหน้า เช่น quickly – more quickly – most quickly (อย่างรวดเร็ว)

  1. B) คำสองพยางค์
    – ถ้าเป็นคำสองพยางค์ที่ออกเสียงสั้น เติม er , est เช่น early – earlier – earliest (เแต่ช้า เนิ่น) , simple – simpler , simplest
    – คำสองพยางค์ที่มีเสียงยาว ใช้ more , most ข้างหน้า เช่น modern – more modern , most modern (ทันสมัย) , correct – more correct , most correct (ถูก) , famous – more famous – most famous (มีชื่อเสียง)
    (คำบางคำก็ใช้ได้ทั้งสองแบบ เช่น common – commoner – commonest หรือ common – more common – most common (ธรรมดา)
  2. C) คำสามพยางค์ขึ้นไป ใช้ more , most ข้างหน้า โดยไม่มีข้อยกเว้น เช่น
expensive – more expensive , most expensive (แพง)

หมายเหตุ ใช้ more , most กับ adverb ที่เกิดจากการเติม ly และ adjective
             ที่เกิดจากการเติม – ful , – ing และ -ed เช่น carefully – more carefully
             – most carefully (อย่างระมัดระวัง), boring – more boring – most
             boring (น่าเบื่อ) , tired – more tired – most tired (เหนื่อย)

IRREGULAR COMPARISON

คำ adjective และ adverb ต่อไปนี้ มีรูปคำ ระดับกว่า และระดับสุด ผิดจากกฏเกณฑ์ที่กล่าวมา จะต้องจดจำเป็นพิเศษ ดังนี้

ระดับธรรมดา (ปกติ)
(Positive Degree)

ระดับกว่า
(Compaative Degree)

ระดับสูงสุด
(Superlative Degree)

good (ดี)

better (ดีกว่า)

best (ดีที่สุด)

well (ดี)

better (ดีกว่า)

best (ดีที่สุด)

many(มาก)ใช้กับนามนับได้

more (มากกว่า)

most (มากที่สุด)

much (มาก)ใช้กับนามนับไม่ได้

more (มากกว่า)

most (มากที่สุด)

little(น้อย) ใช้กับนามนับไม่ได้

less (น้อยกว่า)

least (น้อยที่สุด)

far (ไกล)

farther (ไกลกว่า)

farthest (ไกลที่สุด)

far (เหนือชั้น สูง)

further(เหนือชั้นกว่า)

furthest (เหนือชั้นที่สุด)

3) COMPARISON OF SUPREMACY การเปรียบเทียบแสดงความเป็นที่สุด)

การเปรียบเทียบแสดงความเป็นที่สุด มีการใช้ระดับคำสุด (Superlative) มีข้อสังเกตดังนี้
         – เมื่อประกอบหน้าคำนาม ใข้ the นำหน้า เช่น This is the shortest way to town.
         – ถ้าใช้หลังกิริยาไม่จำเป็นต้องมี the เช่น That way is shortest. = That way is the shortest. (ถ้ามีคำแสดงความเป็นเจ้าของ ก็ไม่ต้องมี the)
         – การเปรียบเทียบระดับสุดจะต้องใช้กับสิ่งของตั้งแต่สามสิ่งขึ้นไป เช่น
Of the three boys, Nipon is the tallest. (Of the two boys, Nipon is the taller.)

✅ PARTIAL TRANSCRIPT:
Hi! Bob the Canadian here! I thought today we would look at comparatives and superlatives in the English language. And if you’re not sure what they are, I think you’ll know in a second, because if you look here you’ll see that I’m standing close to the camera, but if you look here you’ll see that I’m standing closer. If we compare these two, if we look at these as comparatives, it’s obvious that in this one I am closer to the camera. The superlative though would be over here. In this frame below it is obvious that I am the closest. If we compare all three, or if we look at all three, in this frame I am the closest to the camera.
Let’s look at a few more!
This cement block looks heavy, but this cement block looks heavier than this cement block. But when I look here I think this cement block is probably the heaviest. So this cement block is heavy. This one heavier, and this one is the heaviest. Look at those muscles, by the way!
I don’t know about you, but I think this guy looks cool, but then I was thinking this guy looks cooler than this guy. But when I saw this guy over here I thought, \”He is the coolest!\” So cool, cooler, and the coolest.
What three words should we do next? How about small, smaller, and smallest. You can see over here that the rock I am holding is small, but if you compare it to this rock you’ll see that this rock is smaller. This rock is small. This rock is smaller. And if we look over here we’ll see that this rock is the smallest. So small, smaller, smallest.
So if we look here we see that, for some reason, I’m short, but if we look here I’m definitely shorter than I am over here. But if we look over here in this frame I am definitely the shortest of all three. So short, shorter, and shortest.
So as you know on our farm we grow a lot of flowers and when we harvest them we make them into bouquets. If you look right here, I think this bouquet is pretty, but this bouquet is prettier. And I think this bouquet is the prettiest. So when we compare these two, I think this one is prettier, but when we look at all of them, I think this one is the prettiest.
So if you look right here you’ll see that this stuffed animal I’m holding is big, but if you look here and compare to this one, this one is bigger. So this one is big, but this one is bigger. But, if we look over here, this one is the biggest stuffed animal that my daughter owns. Thanks, by the way, for letting me use your toys.
Sometimes when I walk I’m slow, but if you look here you can see that sometimes I’m slower. If we compare these two, it’s very clear that right here I am slower than I am over here. But if you look over here, I must be really, really tired because in this one I am the slowest. So slow, slower, and slowest.
