คำคุณศัพท์ 

   คุณศัพท์ (Adjectives) เป็นคำที่ใช้ทำหน้าที่ขยายคำนามหรือคำสรรพนาม (ถ้านำไปขยายสรรพนามต้องอยู่หลังตลอดไป) เพื่อทำให้เห็นทราบรายละเอียดของคำนามรือคำสรรพนามเพิ่มเติม

ตัวอย่างของคำคุณศัพท์ เช่น

bad เลว
brown สีน้ำตาล
fat อ้วน
happy มีความสุข
red สีแดง
short สั้น, เตี้ย
tall สูง
this นี้
those เหล่านี้
wise ฉลาด

ตัวอย่าง ลองเปรียบเทียบประโยคต่างๆต่อไปนี้
This is a car. นี้คือรถยนต์
This is a red car. นี้คือรถยนต์สีแดง

A man is sitting on a chair. ชายคนหนึ่งนั่งคนเก้าอี้
A fat man is sitting on a brown chair. ชายอ้วนคนหนึ่งนั่งคนเก้าอี้สีน้ำตาล

เราจะรู้สึกว่าประโยคที่มีคุณศัพท์มาเพิ่มเติมนั้น สามารถทำให้เราเห็นภาพของสิ่งต่างๆได้ดีขึ้น

ชนิดของคุณศัพท์
คุณศัพท์ในภาษาอังกฤษแบ่งออกเป็น 11 ชนิด คือ 
1. คำคุณศัพท์บอกลักษณะ (Descriptive Adjective) เป็นคำที่ใช้ลักษณะหรือคุณภาพของคนสัตว์ สิ่งของและสถานที่ เช่น 

bad เลว, ไม่ดี
blue สีฟ้า
brave กล้าหาญ
clever ฉลาด
cowardly ขี้ขลาด, ไม่กล้า
fat อ้วน
foolish โง่

good ดี
poor จน
pretty น่ารัก
rich ร่ำรวย
shot สั้น, เตี้ย
sorry เสียใจ, โศกเศร้า
thin ผอม

ตัวอย่าง
The poor man lives in the old house. (คนจนอยู่ในบ้านเก่าๆ) 
The black cat caught a small rat last night. (แมวดำนั้นจับหนูได้หลายตัวเมื่อคืนก่อน)

 

2. คุณศัพท์บอกสัญชาติ (Proper Adjective) เป็นคำที่ไปขยายนามเพื่อบอกสัญชาติ ซึ่งอันที่จริงมีรูปเปลี่ยนมาจากคำนามเฉพาะ (Proper noun) เช่น

Thailand  (ประเทศไทย)

China  (ประเทศจีน)

English (คนอังกฤษ)
American (คนอเมริกัน)
Thai (คนไทย)
German (คนเยอรมัน)
Italian (คนอิตาเลี่ยน)
Japanese (คนญี่ปุ่น)
Chinese (คนจีน)

ตัวอย่าง 
I like  Chinese food but he likes Korean food. (ฉันชอบอาหารจีนแต่เขาชอบอาหารเกาหลี) 
Do you read Japanese novel? (คุณอ่านนิยายภาษาญี่ปุ่นด้วยหรือ) 
The English language is used by every nation. (ภาษาอังกฤษใช้ในทุกประเทศ)

 

3. คำคุณศัพท์บอกปริมาณ (Quantitive Adjective) เป็นคำที่ไปขยายนาม เพื่อบอกให้ทราบปริมาณของสิ่งเหล่านั้นว่า มีมากหรือน้อย (แต่ไม่ทราบจำนวนที่แน่นอน)ได้แก่ 

much, many, little, some, any, enough, 
half, great, all, whole, sufficient

He drank much milk at home yesterday.  (เขาดื่มนมมากที่บ้านเมื่อวานนี้) 
He did not give any present to his sister.  (เขาไม่ได้ให้ของขวัญกับน้องสาวของเขาเลย) 
There are many students in the bus.  (มีนักเรียนหลายคนในรถประจำทาง)

4. คำคุณศัพท์บอกจำนวนแน่นอน (Numberal Adjective) เป็นคำที่ไปขยายนาม เมื่อแสดงจำนวนที่แน่นอนของนามนั้น แบ่งเป็น 3 ชนิด คือ 
  4.1 คุณศัพท์ที่ใช้บอกจำนวนนับ เช่น one, two, three, four, five, six, seven

ตัวอย่าง
I have five friends in this group. (ฉันมีเพื่อนอยู่ 5 คนในกลุ่มนี้)
Tim wants to buy three bottles of water.  (ทิมต้องการซื้อน้ำสามขวด)

  4.2 คำคุณศัพท์ที่ใช้บอกลำดับ เช่น first, second, third, fifth, sixth, seventh

ตัวอย่าง
Joy is the first girl to be rewarded in our class. (จอยเป็นเด็กผู้หญิงคนแรกที่ได้รับรางวัลนี้) 
He is the third son of my family.  (เขาเป็นลูกคนที่ 3 ของครอบครัว) 
She works on the sixth floor.  (เธอทำงานอยู่ที่ชั้นที่ 6) 

  4.3 คุณศัพท์บอกตัวคูณหรือพหูคูณของนาม เช่น double(2 เท่า), triple(3 เท่า), fourfold (4 เท่า)
You got double bonus. คุณได้รับโบนัส 2 เท่า 
Buddha, Dhamma, and Sangha are triple gems. (พระพุทธ พระธรรม และพระสงฆ์ คือแก้ว 3 ประการ)

5. คุณศัพท์ชี้เฉพาะ (Demonstrative adjective) ได้แก่ 

this (ใช้กับนามเอกพจน์ ที่อยู่ใกล้มือ)
that (ใช้กับนามเอกพจน์ ที่อยู่ไกลมือ)
these (ใช้กับนามพหูพจน์ ที่อยู่ใกล้มือ)
those (ใช้กับนามพหูพจน์ ที่อยู่ไกลมือ)
such, same

ตัวอย่าง
That man is my father.  (ผู้ชายคนนั้นเป็นพ่อของฉัน) 
He said the same thing two or three times.  (เขาพูดถึงสิ่งเดียวกันนี้2หรือ3ครั้งแล้ว) 
These books are mine and those pens are his. (สมุดพวกนี้เป็นของฉัน และ ปากกาพวกนั้นเป็นของเขา)

 

6. คุณศัพท์บอกคําถาม (interrogative adjective) ใช้ขยายคำนามเพื่อให้เป็นคําถามโดยจะวางไว้ ต้นประโยคและอยู่หย้าคำนามเสมอ ได้แก่ what, which, whose
ตัวอย่าง
What music is he listening in the room?  (เขากําลังฟังเพลงอะไรอยู่ในห้อง) 
Which way shall we go left or right?   (พวกเราจะไปทางไหนกัน ซ้ายหรือขวา?)
Whose car is this?  It is so beautiful.  (รถคันนี้เป็นของใคร? มันสวยมากเลย)

7. คุณศัพท์แสดงความเป็นเจ้า (Possessive adjective) เช่น 

my ของฉัน    your ของคุณ
our ของพวกเรา  his ของเขา
her  ของเธอ    its ของมัน
their ของพวกเขา, ของพวกมัน

This is my picture.   (นี่เป็นรูปของฉัน) 
Her pencils are on his desk.  (ดินสอของเธออยู่บนโต๊ะของเขา) 
Our nation needs solidarity.  (ประเทศชาติของเราต้องการความสามัคคี) 
Our parents work hard every day for us. (พ่อแม่ของพวกเราาทํางานหนักทุกวันก็เพื่อพวกเรา)

 

8. คุณศัพท์แบ่งแยก  (Distributive adjective) เป็นคําคุณศัพท์ที่ไปขยายนาม มีความหมายในลักษณะเพื่อแยกนามออกจากกันเป็น อันหนึ่ง หรือส่วนหนึ่งได้แก่ 

each แต่ละ   every ทุกๆ
either ไม่อันใดก็อันหนึ่ง  neither ไม่ทั้งสอง

ตัวอย่าง 
Every student has his bicycle. (นักเรียนทุกคนมีจักรยานเป็นของตัวเอง)

 

9. คุณศัพท์เน้นความ (Emphasizing Adjective) เป็นคุณศัพท์ที่ใช้ขยายนามเพื่อเน้นความให้มีนำหนักขึ้น เช่น

own เอง
very ที่แปลว่า นั้น,นั้นเอง,นั้นจริงๆ

ตัวอย่าง 
She can buy her own house.   (เธอสามารถซื้อบ้านเป็นของตัวเองได้) 
Susan is my own girl-friend.    (ซูซานเป็นแฟนผมเอง)
He is the very man who bought a car last week. 
   (เขาคือชายคนที่ซื้อรถยนต์ไปเมื่ออาทิตย์ก่อน) 
 
10. คุณศัพท์บอกอุทาน (Exclamatory Adjective) ได้แก่ what (อะไรเช่นนี้)
ตัวอย่าง 
What a nice man he is!   (เขาเป็นผู้ชายที่ดี อะไรเช่นนี้) 
What a good idea it is!   (มันเป็นความคิดที่ดี อะไรเช่นนี้) 
What a wonderful ring it is!  (มันเป็นแหวนที่งดงาม อะไรเช่นนี้)

 

11. คุณศัพท์บอกความสัมพันธ์ (Relative Adjective) เป็นคำคุณศัพท์ที่ใช้ขยายนามที่ตามหลังและในเวลาเดียวกันก็ยังทําหน้าที่คล้ายส้นธานเชื่อมความในประโยคของตัวเองกับประโยคข้างหน้าให้สัมพันธ์กันอีกด้วย ได้แก่ 
What (อะไรก็ได้), whichever (อันไหนก็ได้) 
ตัวอย่าง
Give me what money you have.   (จงให้เงินเท่าที่คุณมีอยู่แก่ฉัน) 
I will take whichever book you do not want.  (ฉันจะนําเอาหนังสือล่มที่คุณไม่ต้องการ)

ตำแหน่งของคำคุณศัพท์ 
เราสามารถเขียนคำคุณศัพท์ในตำแหน่งต่างๆของประโยคได้ดังนี้
1. เขียนไว้หน้าคำนามที่มันไปขยายโดยตรงได้ เช่น 
The fat man is walking slowly.  (ชายอ้วนคนนั้นกำลังเดินอย่างช้า) 
A clever boy is able to answer a difficult problem.  (เด็กฉลาดสามารถตอบปัญหาที่ยากได้)

2. เขียนไว้หลัง Verb to be 
The weather is hot.  อากาศร้อน
That boy is so lazy. เด็กคนนั้นขี้เกียจมาก
She is very tall. เธอสูงมาก
3.  ไว้หลังคำกริยาเหล่าซึ่งสามาถใช้แทน verb to be ได้ เช่น

look, feel, seem, get, taste, smell, 
turn, go, appear, keep, become, sound

Sugar tastes sweet.  (น้ำตาลมีรสหวาน) 
Her face turns red.   (หน้าของเธอเปลี่ยนเป็นสีแดง) 

4. เขียนไว้หลังคำนามที่ไปทำหน้าที่เป็นกรรมได้ ทั้งนี้เพื่อให้ความหมายของประโยคสมบรูณ์ขึ้น 

ตัวอย่าง 
He always makes his wife happy. (เขามักจะทำให้ภรรยาของเขาให้มีความสุขเสมอ) 
We will paint the wall blue.  (พวกเราจะทากำแพงเป็นสีฟ้า)

5. เขียนคำคุณศัพท์ไว้หลังคำนามได้ ไม่ว่านามนั้นจะทำหน้าที่เป็นอะไรก็ตาม ถ้า Adjective ตัวนั้นมี บุพบทวลี มาขยายนามตามหลัง เช่น 
The document sent by messenger will reach him this afternoon. 
    (เอกสารที่คนส่งเอกสารส่งมาจะมาถึงคุณบ่ายนี้) 
ข้อสังเกต sent เป็น Adjective เรียงตามหลังนาม document ได้เพราะมีบุพบทวลี by messenger มาขยายตามหลัง 

I have known someone suitable for his position. 
    (ฉันได้รู้จักบางคนที่เหมาะสมสำหรับตำแหน่งของเขา) 
ข้อสังเกต  suitable เป็นคุณศัพท์ เรียงไว้หลังนาม someone ได้เพราะมีบุพบทวลี for his position มาขยายตามหลัง
