บทความนี้เราจะไปเรียนรู้ “สุภาษิตและสำนวนในภาษาอังกฤษ” กัน ซึ่งเป็นสำนวนที่มาจากหลายๆประเทศและหลายๆแห่งทั่วโลก รวมถึงประเทศไทยด้วย ถ้าพร้อมแล้วไปดูกันครับ

Don’t count your chickens before they are hatched. -อย่าหวังน้ำบ่อหน้า อย่าตั้งความหวังลมๆ แล้งๆ

People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. -อย่าตำหนิคนอื่นเขา ในเมื่อตัวเราก็ไม่ต่างกัน (ว่าแต่เขาอิเหนาเป็นเอง)

You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink. -อย่าข่มเขาโคขืนให้กินหญ้า (ให้คำแนะนะได้แต่ไม่สามารถบังคับให้ทำตามได้)

When the cat’s away the mice will play. – (แมวไม่อยู่ หนูร่าเริง) หน้าไว้หลังหลอก

A real king is greater than his crown. A real man is more than his clothes. -ความเป็นคนไม่ได้อยู่ที่เสื้อผ้า ความเป็นราชาไม่ได้อยู่ที่มงกุฎ

Let a sleeping dog lie. -อย่าแกว่งเท้าหาเสี้ยน อย่าฟื้นฝอยหาตะเข็บ (อย่าหาเรื่องใส่ตัว)

A bad workman always blames his tools. -รำไม่ดีโทษปี่โทษกลอง

Cross the stream where it is shallowest. -จงหาวิธีง่ายที่สุดในการแก้ปัญหา

A bird in hand is worth two in the bush. -จงพอใจในสิ่งที่มีอยู่

Don’t cross a bridge until you come to it. -อย่าตีตนไปก่อนไข้

Cut your coat according to your cloth. -นกน้อยทำรังแต่พอตัว

The proof of the pudding is in the eating. -ค่าของคนอยู่ผลของงาน

Don’t make a mountain out of a mole hill. -อย่าทำเรื่องเล็กให้เป็นเรื่องใหญ่

No man is happy who does not think himself so. -คนที่ปราศจากความสุขก็คือคนที่คิดว่าตัวเองไม่มีความสุข (สุขหรือทุกข์อยู่ที่ใจ)

It’s never too late to mend. -ไม่มีคำว่าสายเกินไปสำหรับการแก้ไข้ * One good turn deserves another. แตงโมเลื้อยไปแตงไทเลื้อยมา * The harder the storm the sooner it’s over. -เรื่องใหญ่จบง่ายกว่าเรื่องเล็ก

There is no rose without thorns. -ไม่มีกุหลาบใดปราศจากหนาม ไม่มีความสำเร็จใดที่ปราศจากอุปสรรค

Too many cooks spoil the broth. -มากหมอมากความ

Every dog has his day. -วันพรไม่มีหนเดียว (ทุกคนย่อมมีโอกาส)

Success is a ladder that cannot be climbed with your hands in your pockets. ( American Prov. ) -ความสำเร็จเกิดขึ้นได้เพราะความเพียร

If you don’t value what you have, you’re sure to lose it. -กว่าจะรู้ค่าสิ่งที่มีอยู่ก็สายเสียแล้ว

A man of word not a man of deed is like a garden full of weed. -ค่าของคนอยู่ที่ผลของงาน (ไม่ใช่ที่คำพูด)

If you would enjoy the fire you must put up with smoke. -(ถ้าจะเล่นไฟก็ไม่ควรกลัวควัน) สุขกับทุกข์เป็นของคู่กัน

What’s sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. -ทุกคนมีสิทธิเท่ากัน

Don’t put all eggs in one basket. -อย่าตั้งความหวังไว้กับสิ่งเดียว (พลาดพลั้งจะเหมือนนกปีกหัก)

Faults are thick when love is thin. ( Danish. ) -ยามรักจืดจางก็มองเห็นแต่ข้อเสีย (ของกันและกัน)

It’s impossible to judge someone without judging yourself. -จงพิจารณาตนเองก่อนไปตัดสินคนอื่น

A man with little learning is like a frog who thinks its paddle a great sea. -คนมีความรู้น้อยเปรียบดังกบในแอ่งน้ำขังที่มันคิดว่านั่นคือทะเล (กบในกะลา)

By a sweet tougue and kindness you can drag an elephant with a hair. -ปิยะวาจาและความเมตตาชนะทุกสิ่ง

The best way to fight an evil man is to pay no attention. -จงสู้กับคนชั่วด้วยวิธีอหิงสา

Love your neighbors, but don’t pull down the fence. -จงรักเพื่อนบ้านแต่ต้องมีขอบเขต

He who asks a question is fool for five minutes; He who does not ask remains a fool forever. -ยอมโง่ห้านาทีเพื่อถามสิ่งที่ไม่รู้ดีกว่าไม่ถามแล้วโง่ตลอดชีวิต

A word spoken in anger may mar an entire life. (Greek) -การพูดอะไรเวลาโกรธ อาจทำลายชีวิตทั้งชีวิต (จงมีสติ)

There’s nothing worse than a person looking for a quarrel. (Setian) -ไม่มีอะไรจะเลวร้ายยิ่งกว่าคนที่คอยแต่จะหาเรื่องทะเลาะวิวาท

The teeth that laugh are also those that bite. (West- African) -(หน้าเนื้อใจเสือ) ปากปราศัยน้ำใจเชือดคอ

The price of your hat isn’t the measure of your brain. (African- American) -รูปกายภายนอกไม้ได้บ่งบอกถึงความสามารถ

With a stout heart, a mouse can lift an elephant. (Tibetan) -จิตใจที่แข็งแรงสามารถชนะอุปสรรคทั้งมวล

Don’t hang your hat higher than you can reach. (Belizean) อย่าตั้งความหวังไว้สูงเกินความสามารถของตน

Beauty without virtue is a flower without perfume. (French) -ความงามที่ไร้คุณค่าเปรียบดังดอกไม้ที่ปราศจากกลิ่นหอม

Set a thief to catch a thief. -หนามยอกเอาหนามบ่ง

Little is spent with difficulty, much with ease. (Thai) -เสียน้อยเสียยาก เสียมากเสียง่าย

Even a fish wouldn’t get into trouble if it kept its mouth shut. (Korean) -(แม้แต่ปลาก็ไม่เดือดร้อนถ้าไม่อ้าปาก) ปลาหมอตายเพราะปาก

Nothing is too high for a man to reach, but he must climb with care and confidence. -ไม่มีอะไรไกลเกินฝัน ขอพียงเชื่อมั่นเมื่อก้าวไป

The truly rich are those who enjoy what thy have. (Yiddish) -ความร่ำรวยที่แท้จริงคือพอใจในใงที่มีอยู่

Worry often gives a small thing a big shadow. (Swedish) -ความวิตกกังวลทำให้เรื่องเล็กกลายเป็นเรื่องใหญ่

Never spend time with people who don’t respect you. (Maori) -ไม่ควรเสียเวลาเสวนากับคนที่ไม่นับถือเรา

Don’t call the alligator big-mouth till you have crossed the river. (Belizean) -อย่าวิจารณ์คนอื่นเขาถ้างานยังไม่เสร็จ

Don’t be so clever; cleverer ones than you are in jail. (Russian) -อย่าทำเป็นอวดฉลาดคนที่ฉลาดกว่าท่านตอนนี้อยู่ในคุก

Having two ears and one tougue we should listen twice as much as we speak. (Turkish) -จงฟังมากกว่าพูด

All food fit to eat, but not all words are fit to speak. (Haitian) -อาหารกินได้ทุกเวลา แต่วาจาควรสงวนไว้บ้าง

Fools are like other folks as long as they are silent. (Danish) -ตราบเท่าที่ไม่เอ่ยวาจา ไม่มีใครรู้ว่าเราโง่

If you follow a fool, you’re a fool yourself. (Jamaican) -เข้าฝูงหงส์ก็เป็นหงส์ เข้าฝูงกาก็เป็นกา

The only way to have a friend is to be one. -ถ้าอยากมีเพื่อนก็ต้องทำตัวให้เป็นเพื่อน (รู้จักเอาใจเขามาใส่ใจเรา)

Never make a defence or apology before you be excused. (Charles l) -อย่ากินปูนร้อน (อย่าแก้ตัวก่อนถูกกล่าวหา)

Neither a borrower nor a lender be. For loan often lose both itself and friends. (William Shakespesre) -ไม่ควรเป็นทั้งลูกหนี้และเจ้าหนี้ การกู้ยืมทำให้เสียทั้งเงินแล้ะเพื่อน

Do wrong once and you’ll never hear the end of it. -ทำผิดครั้งเดียว ผู้คนจะพูดถึงไม่มีวันจบสิ้น

The best way to succeed in life is to act on the advice you give to others. -วิธีที่ดีทีสุดในการสร้างความสำเร็จในชีวิตก็คือปฏิบัติตามคำที่แนะนำผู้อื่น

“As you make your bed, so you must lie in it.”

เป็นการเปรียบเทียบกับการปูที่นอน ว่าถ้าเราปูไม่ดีเราก็จะนอนไม่สบาย หมายความว่า คนเราทำอย่างไรก็มักจะได้อย่างนั้น ตรงกับสำนวนไทยที่ว่า ทำดีได้ดี ทำชั่วได้ชั่ว 

“A bad workman always blames his tools.”

แปลตรงตัวคือคนงานที่ทำได้ไม่ดีมักจะโทษเครื่องมือของเขา ตรงกับสำนวนไทย รำไม่ดีโทษปี่โทษกลอง ซึ่งหมายถึงคนเราเมื่อทำผิดแล้วไม่ยอมรับว่าเป็นเพราะตัวเอง แต่มักโทษว่าเป็นผู้อื่นเป็นสาเหตุแทน

“Fine feathers make fine birds.”

ขนที่ดีทำให้นกดูสวย ตรงกับสำนวนไทยที่ว่า ไก่งามเพราะขน คนงามเพราะแต่ง หมายถึง คนจะดูดีได้ต้องรู้จักปรุงแต่ง

“Where there is a will there is a way.”

แปลตรงตัวคือ ที่ไหนมีความหวัง ที่นั่นมักมีหนทางเสมอ ตรงกับสำนวนไทย ความพยายามอยู่ที่ไหน ความสำเร็จอยู่ที่นั่น

“When in Rome, do as the Romans do.”

แปลตรงๆ ตัวได้ว่า เมื่ออยู่ในเมืองโรม จงทำอย่างที่คนโรมันทำ ตรงกับสำนวนไทย เข้าเมืองตาหลิ่วต้องหลิ่วตาตาม หมายความว่า ให้ประพฤติตนตามที่คนส่วนใหญ่ในสังคมทำกัน

แปลตรงตัวได้ว่า การเต้นแทงโก้ต้องอาศัยผู้เต้นสองคนจึงจะทำได้ ตรงกับสำนวนไทยที่ว่า ตบมือข้างเดียวไม่ดัง หมายถึง การทำอะไรเพียงฝ่ายเดียวมักไม่เกิดผล (มักใช้กับเรื่องชู้สาว)

“Speech is silver silence is gold.”

แปลตามประโยคภาษาอังกฤษได้ว่า ค่าของคำพูดเปรียบได้กับเงิน ในขณะที่ค่าของความเงียบเปรียบได้กับทอง ตรงกับสำนวนไทยที่ว่า พูดไปสองไพ่เบี้ย นิ่งเสียตำลึงทอง หมายถึง บางครั้งคำพูดของเราอาจจะทำร้ายคนอื่นหรือก่อให้เกิดความเสียหาย ดังนั้นเงียบไว้น่าจะดีกว่า

“Barking dogs never bite.”

แปลตรงตัวได้ตรงตามสำนวนไทยว่า หมาเห่าไม่กัด หมายความว่า คนอวดเก่งเมื่อถึงสถานการณ์จริงมักไม่กล้าเผชิญหน้า

“Still waters run deep.”

แปลตรงตัวได้ตามสำนวนไทยว่า น้ำนิ่งไหลลึก ใช้กับคนที่มีท่าทางเงียบขรึม ไม่ค่อยพูด แต่มีความคิดที่ล้ำลึกหรือร้ายกาจอยู่ภายใน

“When the cat’s away the mice will play.”

แปลตรงตัวได้ตามสำนวนไทยว่า แมวไม่อยู่ หนูร่าเริง หมายความถึง ผู้ที่อยู่ในปกครอง เมื่อผู้ที่มีอำนาจไม่อยู่ ผู้ที่อยู่ในปกครองจะสนุกสนานร่าเริง เพราะไม่มีคนคอยคุมนั่นเอง ซึ่งมีความหมายทางลบคล้ายกับอีกสำนวนหนึ่งของไทยคือ หน้าไหว้หลังหลอก
