I urge you to support a strong alliance between the United States and Thailand.

Thailand is the oldest friend of the United States in Asia and a major non-NATO ally. Thai troops had fought shoulder to shoulder with American troops in many battles in the past. U.S. and Thai intelligence and security communities have worked together to counter common threats and protect our peoples.

Trade and investment between the United States and Thailand have continued to grow, bringing jobs and opportunities to the peoples of both countries. The largest Thai community overseas is in the United States while a large number of Americans visited Thailand each year.

After months of political paralysis and violence early last year, Thailand is now moving forward with necessary reforms in order to achieve a stronger and sustainable democracy with better checks and balances, good governance and the rule of law.

The Thai economy is now moving ahead with many infrastructure development projects which will help increase the country’s competitiveness in the long run.

The draft of Thailand’s new constitution should be completed by September this year and elections should be held by 2016.

Thailand’s stability and contribution to ASEAN will benefit the United States. A strong alliance between the United States and Thailand will serve the strategic interest of the United States and the success of the Rebalance policy in Asia.

I therefore urge you to give understanding and support for a sustainable democracy in Thailand.
