ทั้ง one (วัน) และ ones (วันสฺ) ถือเป็นสรรพนามที่ใช้แทนคำนามเช่นกัน กล่าวคือ one ใช้ทดแทนนามที่เป็นเอกพจน์นับได้หรือบ่งบอกความหมายเป็นเอกพจน์มีเพียง “หนึ่ง” เท่านั้น ส่วน ones ใช้ทดแทนนามที่เป็นพหูพจน์หรือบ่งบอกความหมายมากกว่าหนึ่ง

ตัวอย่าง
I’m making a sandwich. Would you like one?
=I’m making a sandwich. Would you like a sandwich?
ผมกำลังทำแซนด์วิช คุณจะเอาสักชิ้นไหม
My car is the white one outside.
=My car is the white car outside.
รถยนต์ของฉันก็คือคันสีขาวที่จอดอยู่ข้างนอก
Do you want large packets or small ones?
Do you want large packets or small packets?
คุณต้องการห่อใหญ่หรือห่อเล็ก
We’ve got two kinds of potatoes. Which ones do you want? = =We’ve got two kinds of potatoes. Which potatoes do you want?
เรามีมันฝรั่ง 2 ชนิด คุณต้องการมันฝรั่งแบบไหน

นอกจาก one และ ones ดังกล่าวมา ก็ยังมี the one และ the ones เมื่อเป็นการชี้จำเพาะเจาะจงถึงคำนามที่ได้เอ่ยมาแล้วข้างต้น ทั้งนี้ the one ใช้ทดแทนคำนามเอกพจน์และ the ones ใช้ทดแทนคำนามพหูพจน์ เมื่อเป็นการชี้จำเพาะเจาะจงถึงสิ่งที่กล่าวมาล่วงหน้า

ตัวอย่าง
A : I saw somebody outside one of your windows. He had something in his hand. He opened the window.
B : Which one?
A : The one on the right near the garage. (The one = The window)
ผมเห็นใครบางคนด้านนอกหน้าต่างของคุณบานหนึ่ง เขาถือบางสิ่งอยู่ ในมือของเขา เขาเปิดหน้าต่าง

B : Which ones?
A : The ones on Ladda’s desk. (The ones = The two pencils)

หลักการใช้ one เพิ่มเติม

1. ใช้ one ในความหมาย anybody “ใครก็ได้” เมื่อพูดถึงบุคคลโดยทั่วๆ ไป ไม่เจาะจงลงไปเฉพาะตัวบุคคลใดโดยเฉพาะ หรือไม่เจาะจงเฉพาะกลุ่มของบุคคล เหตุการณ์ ฯลฯตัวอย่าง
One can’t make an omelette without breaking eggs.
ไม่มีใครที่จะสามารถทำไข่เจียวได้โดยไม่ตีไข่ให้แตกก่อน
One shouldn’t get upset about stupid things.
เราไม่ควรจะอารมณ์เสียกับสิ่งที่ไร้สาระ

2. ใช้ one ในหน้าที่ประธาน หรือกรรมของประโยค ส่วน one’s เป็นรูป แสดงความเป็นเจ้าของ (possessive form) และ oneself เป็น reflexive pronounตัวอย่าง
He talks to one like a schoolmaster.
เขาพูดกับใครคนหนึ่งเหมือนกับเป็นครูโรงเรียน
One’s family can be a real nuisance at times.
บางครั้งครอบครัวของคนหนึ่งก็อาจจะสร้างความรำคาญให้ได้
One should always devote oneself to the poor.
คนเราควรจะอุทิศตัวเองให้กับการช่วยเหลือคนจน

3. ในกรณ์ที่ one นำมาใช้ทำหน้าที่เป็นประธาน (subject) ของประโยค หรือวางอยู่หน้าประโยคเวลาใช้ pronoun แทน one จะใช้ he, him, his หรือ himself แทน one
ตัวอย่าง
One cannot succeed at this unless he tries hard.
ไมมีใครสามารถจะทำสิ่งนี้ได้สำเร็จถ้าหากไม่พากเพียรอย่างจริงจัง
One should be careful in talking to his colleagues.
คนเราควรจะระมัดระวังเมื่อพูดคุยกับเพื่อนฝูง

4. ใช้ one เพื่อแทนที่หรือเพื่อเลี่ยงการกล่าวซ้ำนามเดิม
ตัวอย่าง
I’m looking for a flat. I’d really like one with a garden.
ผมกำลังมองหาแฟลตอยู่ ผมอยากได้แฟลตที่อยู่ที่มีสวนอยู่ด้วย
Can I have a melon-a nice ripe one?
ขอแตงโมสักลูกได้ไหม ขอลูกที่สุกเต็มที่หน่อย

หลักการใช้ ones

1. one ดังกล่าวมาข้างต้นเป็นรูปเอกพจน์ (singular) ส่วน ones เป็น รูปพหูพจน์ (plural form) ใช้เพื่อเลี่ยงการกล่าวซ้ำนามพหูพจน์เดิม
ตัวอย่าง
The new designs are much better than the old ones.
รูปแบบใหม่นี้ดูดีกว่ารูปแบบเก่า
A : I’d like a kilo of mangoes.
B : Which ones?
: The ripe ones.
ก : ผมขอซื้อมะม่วงหนึ่งกิโล
ข : เอาแบบไหน
ก : เอาที่สุกแล้ว

2. เราสามารถใช้ article หน้า one (s) ได้ แต่มีข้อแม้ว่า หน้า one (s) จะต้องมีคำคุณศัพท์ประกอบอยู่ด้วย ดังโครงสร้าง
“the/a/an + adjective + one (s)’’
ตัวอย่าง
I’d like a big one with cream on.
ผมขออันใหญ่ที่มีครีมทาข้างบน
I’d like one with cream on.
ผมขออันที่มีครีมทาอยู่ข้างบน

3. one ใช้แทนนามนับได้ (countable noun) ได้เท่านั้น แต่จะไม่นำมา ใช้แทนนามนับไม่ได้ (uncountable nouns) อาทิ milk, energy, happiness, silk, etc. ดังนั้นจึงต้องมีการกล่าวซ้ำนามนับไม่ได้ตัวนั้นเหมือนเดิม
ตัวอย่าง
X If you haven’t got fresh milk I’ll take some tinned one.
/  If you haven’t got fresh milk I’ll take some tinned milk.
X Don’t get artificial silk-we must have real one.
/ Don’t get artificial milk-we must have real silk.

4. เราสามารถละ (omit) คำว่า one (s) ได้หากอยู่หลังคำแสดงขั้นสุด (superlatives) หรืออยู่หลังคำว่า this, that, these, those, either, neither หรือ determiner อื่นเช่น which, etc.
ตัวอย่าง
I think my dog’s the fastest (one)
ผมคิดว่าสุนัขของผมวิ่งได้เร็วที่สุดตัวหนึ่งเช่นกัน
Which (one) would you like? – That (one)
คุณต้องการตัวไหน – ตัวนั้นแหละ
Either (one) will suit me.
ตัวไหนก็ได้ที่เหมาะกับผม

หลักการใช้ There is กับ There are ในประโยคบอกเล่า

ถ้าพูดถึงเอกพจน์หรือสิ่งที่นับไม่ได้ จะใช้ There is เช่น

• There is a spider on the table.  มีแมงมุม(ตัวเดียว)บนโต๊ะ
• There is water in the glass.  มีน้ำ(นับไม่ได้เพราะเป็นของเหลว)ในแก้ว

ถ้าพูดถึงพหูพจน์หรือสิ่งที่มีมากกว่า 1  จะใช้ There are เช่น

• There are three children in the park.  มีเด็ก 3 คนในสวนพารค์
• There are many students in the class.  มีนักเรียนหลายคนในห้อง

สังเกตว่า KruMae แปลโดยใช้คำว่า “มี” เพื่อให้เข้าใจหลักการใช้เวลาแปลเป็นภาษาไทย ประโยคนี้ไม่มี has/have มีแต่ is/are แสดงความเป็นสถานะในการ”มี”

หลักการใช้ประโยคบอกเล่า—แบบตัวย่อ

ตัวย่อจะใช้บ่อยในเชิงการสนทนา เพราะคนต่างชาติชอบพูดแบบรวบๆเร็วๆ เลยมีตัวย่อที่ให้เห็นการออกเสียงแต่ไม่ใช่รูปของมัน ดังนี้

• There’s a good song on the radio.  (รูปย่อของ There is)
• There’re nine cats on the roof.  

  (รูปย่อของ There are–ใช้ในการพูดเท่านั้น!  ไม่นิยมในการเขียน)

หลักการใช้หลักการใช้ There is กับ There are ในประโยคปฏิเสธ

ง่ายๆ แค่ใส่ not หลัง is/am  เช่น

• There is not a rabbit in the store.
• There isn’t a rabbit in the store.  (ย่อ is not)
• There are not rabbits in the store.
• There aren’t rabbits in the store. (ย่อ are not)

หลักการใช้ There is/There are กับ ANY

เห็น any ก็รู้ละว่าพูดถึงประโยคปฏิเสธ  any ใช้ควบคู่กับ There is/There are เมื่อจะบอกว่าไม่มีสิ่งๆนั้นเลย  เช่น

• There aren’t any trees in my street.
• There isn’t any in the swimming pool.

หลักการใช้หลักการใช้ There is กับ There are ในประโยคคำถาม

เหมือนหลักการของเทนส์ทั่วไป เอา is/are มาหน้าสุดเลย–แล้วตามด้วย there เช่น

• Is there a dog in the supermarket? – No, there isn’t.
• Are there any dogs in the park? – Yes, there are.  (Any ใช้กับ ปฏิเสธ+พหูพจน์)
• Is there a security guard in the shop? – Yes, there is.
• Are there any polar bears in Antarctica? – No, there aren’t. (Any ใช้กับ ปฏิเสธ+พหูพจน์)
• Is there any ice-cream in the freezer? – Yes, there is. (Any ใช้กับ ปฏิเสธ+นามนับไม่

  ได้)

หลักการใช้ประโยคคำถาม How Many กับ Are There

อยากรู้จำนวนของสิ่งๆนั้นใช่มั้ย? ขึ้นต้นด้วย How many ต่อด้วยสิ่งที่เราอยากรู้จำนวน + is/am + there ไปเลย!  เช่น

• How many students in your class?
