the เป็น definite article (เดฟินิท อาทิเคิล) ใช้วางหน้าคำนามนับได้รูป เอกพจน์หรือรูปพหูพจน์ และคำนามนับไม่ได้ซึ่งมีเพียงรูปเอกพจน์ หากมีการระบุ จำเพาะเจาะจง

ลองเปรียบเทียบการใช้ a หรือ an ที่ไม่ระบุเจาะจง กับการใช้ the ที่มีการระบุเจาะจง จากข้อความต่อไปนี้
Can I have a banana?
a banana ไม่ได้เจาะจงว่าเป็นกล้วยลูกใด
Can I have the banana?
the banana ระบุว่าเป็นกล้วยลูกที่อยู่ในจานซึ่งมีเพียงลูกเดียว
แlดงให้เห็นว่าการที่เราใช้ the ก็เพราะมีความเด่นชัดว่าเป็นสิ่งใดหรือบุคคลใดที่เรากำลังเอ่ยถึง ลองพิจารณาดูตัวอย่างที่แสดงต่อไปนี้
It’s dark in this room. Switch on the light.
(the light ในที่นี้หมายถึง the light in this room “ไฟในห้องนี้” เท่านั้น)
ต่อไปนี้จะขอกล่าวถึงการออกเสียง และการใช้ the ดังนี้

1. การออกเสียง
1.1 the ออกเสียง เดอะ เมื่อวางอยู่หน้าคำที่ขึ้นต้นด้วยเสียงพยัญชนะ (consonant sound คันเซอแน็นทฺ ซาวดฺ) เช่น
the black book (เดอะ แบล็ค บุ๊ค)
the red car (เดอะ เรด คา)

1.2 the ออกเสียง ดิ เมื่อวางอยู่หน้าคำที่ขึ้นต้นด้วยเสียงสระ (vowel sound ) เช่น
the interview (ดิ อินเทอวิว)
the awful sound (ดิ ออฟุล ซาวดฺ)

2. การใช้
2.1 ใช้ the หน้าคำนามนับได้รูปเอกพจน์ นามนับได้รูปพหูพจน์ และนามนับไม่ได้ หากมีการชี้จำเพาะเจาะจงถึงสิ่งนั้นๆ บุคคลนั้นๆ
ตัวอย่าง
Mike has a pen and a pencil. The pen is blue. The pencil is white.
ไมค์มีปากกาหนึ่งด้ามและดินสอหนึ่งแท่ง
ปากกาด้ามนั้นสีน้ำเงิน ส่วนดินสอแท่งนั้นสีขาว
A : I have two pieces of fruit for us, an apple and a banana.
Which do you want?
B : I’d like the banana, thanks.
ก – ผมมีผลไม้สองชิ้นคือ แอปเปิล และกล้วย คุณจะเอาอันไหน
ข – เอากล้วยครับ ขอบคุณ

2.2 ใช้ the เมื่อเป็นที่ชัดเจนในสถานการณ์นั้นๆ แล้วว่าเราหมายถึงสิ่งใด หรือบุคคลใด อยู่ที่ไหน
ตัวอย่าง
A : Where’s Simon?
B : He’s in the kitchen. (= the kitchen in this house)
ก – ไซมอนอยู่ที่ไหน
ข – เขาอยู่ในครัว (หมายถึง ครัวในบ้านหลังนี้)
A : Could you switch on the light? (= the light in this room)
B : Yes, sure.
ก – คุณเปิดไฟให้หน่อยได้ไหม (หมายถึง ไฟในห้องนี้)
ข – ได้ครับ

2.3 ใช้ the เมื่อเอ่ยถึงสิ่งหนึ่งๆ ที่มีเพียงหนึ่งเดียวในโลก เช่น the sun, the moon, the earth, the sky, the world
ตัวอย่าง
I enjoy lying in the sun.
ผมชอบนอนอาบแดด
Would you like to travel round the world?
คุณอยากจะเดินทางรอบโลกไหม

2.4 ใช้ the กับชื่อของอุปกรณ์ดนตรี และสิ่งประดิษฐ์ทางวิทยาศาสตร์
ตัวอย่าง
She can play the guitar and the piano.
เธอเล่นกีตาร์และเปียโนได้
Marconi invented the radio.
มาร์โคนิประดิษฐ์วิทยุ

2.5 ใช้ the กับคำคุณศัพท์บางคำที่บ่งบอกสภาพทางร่างกาย (physical state) และสภาพทางสังคม (social state) เช่น young, old, rich, poor, blind, brave, deaf, dead, sick, disabled ฯลฯ โดยมีความหมายเช่นเดียวกับ adjective + people (in general) เช่น
the young = young people the old = old people the brave = brave people
ตัวอย่าง
The young should listen to the old.
= Young people should listen to old people.
คนหนุ่มสาวควรจะรับฟังคนชรา
We should help the blind.
= We should help blind people.
เราควรจะช่วยเหลือคนตาบอด

2.6 ใช้ the .หน้าคำแสดงสัญชาติของผู้คนในประเทศนั้นๆ เช่น the English, the French, the American ฯลฯ
ตัวอย่าง
The English drink a lot of tea.
ชาวอังกฤษดื่มน้ำชามาก
The Italians are great lovers.
ชาวอิตาเลียนเป็นนักรักที่ยิ่งใหญ่

จะสังเกตเห็นว่า The English และ The Italians หมายถึงสัญชาติของ ผู้คนในประเทศนั้นๆ เหมือนๆ กัน แต่ต่างกันที่ The English คำว่า English ไม่มี -s ข้างท้าย แต่ The Italians คำว่า Italians มี -S ข้างท้าย ท่านผู้อ่านจึงควรจะทราบดังนี้

การใส่และไม่ใส่ -s ท้ายคำแสดงสัญชาติ
ก. คำแสดงสัญชาติที่ลงท้ายด้วย -sh เช่น the English, the Irish, the British) -ch (เช่น the French, the Dutch) หรือลงท้ายด้วย -ese (เช่น the Japanese, the Chinese) จะไม่เติม -s ท้ายคำแสดงสัญชาติ

ข. คำแสดงสัญชาติที่มิได้ลงท้ายด้วย -sh, -ch, -ese จะเติม -s ท้ายคำ แสดงสัญชาตินั้นๆ เมื่อหมายถึง ผู้คนในประเทศนั้นๆ เช่น (the) Italians, (the) Germans ฯลฯ

2.7 ใช้ the กับชื่ทะเล มหาสมุทร ลำคลอง ทะเลทราย หมู่เกาะ โรงแรม โรงภาพยนตร์ พิพิธกัณฑ์ คลับ ภัตตาคาร เทือกเขา แม่น้ำ และผับ เช่น the Atlantic    มหาสมุทรแอตแลนติก
the Nile        แม่น้ำไนล์
the Sahara    ทะเลทรายซาฮาร่า
the Changrila Hotel โรงแรมแซงกรีลา
the Chao Phya Cafe เจ้าพระยาคาเฟ่
the Chalerm Khung Cinema โรงภาพยนตร์เฉลิมกรุง
the Panama Canal คลองปานามา
the Rockies    เทือกเขารอกกี
the Mediterranean Sea ทะเลเมดิเตอร์เรเนียน
ตัวอย่าง
The Nile flows into the Mediterranean Sea.
แม่น้ำไนล์ไหลลงสู่ทะเลเมดิเตอร์เรเนียน
Look at the Fiji Islands in the Pacific.
จงมองดูหมู่เกาะฟิจิในมหาสมุทรแปซิฟิก

2.8 ใช้ the กับทิศทางตามเข็มทิศ เช่น the north, the south, the east, the west, the north-east, the south-west ฯลฯ
ตัวอย่าง
It’s much colder in the north of England than in the south.
ทางเหนือของประเทศอังกฤษอากาศหนาวเย็นกว่าทางใต้
A : Where are you from?
B : I’m from the north-east of Thailand.
ก – คุณมาจากไหน
ข – ผมมาจากทางตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือของประเทศไทย

2.9 ใช้ the เมื่อกล่าวถึงครอบครัวหรือตระกูล ทั้งนี้สังเกตได้จากการเติม -s ที่นามสกุล ซึ่งแสดงถึงตระกูลของครอบครัวนั้น
ตัวอย่าง
The Kennedys are probably the most famous family in the USA.
ตระกูลเคนเนดี้อาจจะนับได้ว่าเป็นตระกูลที่มีชื่อเสียงที่สุดในสหรัฐอเมริกา We lived next door to the Browns.
เราอาศัยอยู่ในบ้านหลังถัดจากครอบครัวบราวน์

2.10 ใช้ the กับชื่อประเทศที่มีคำว่า union, republic, state, kingdom, และ isle ประกอบด้วย เช่น
the Soviet Union ประเทศสหภาพโซเวียด
the United States (of America) ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา
the Federal Republic of Germany ประเทศสาธารณรัฐเยอรมนี
the United Kingdom ประเทศสหราชอาณาจักรอังกฤษ

แต่มีอยู่บางประเทศที่ถึงแม้จะไม่มีคำที่ระบุมาประกอบอยู่ด้วยก็ใช้
the นั่นคือ the Philippines ประเทศฟิลิปปินส์
the Netherlands (หรือ Holland) ประเทศเนเธอร์แลนด์ (หรือฮอลแลนด์)

ประเทศอื่นนอกจากนี้ ไม่ใช้ the วางไว้หน้าชื่อประเทศ เช่น Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Brunei, Myanmar, etc.
ตัวอย่าง
He graduated from the United States.
เขาจบการศึกษามาจากประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา
Another name of the Netherlands is Holland
อีกชื่อหนึ่งของประเทสเนเธอร์แลนด์คือฮอลแลนด์

2.11 ใช้ the กับคำที่แสดงขั้น superlative เช่น the oldest, the best, the least, the youngest, the longest, the most beautiful ฯลฯ และใช้กับคำแสดงลำดับที่ (ordinal number) เช่น the first, the second, the third, the fourth ฯลฯ
ตัวอย่าง
Sara is the oldest child in the family.
ซาราเป็นลูกคนโตสุดในครอบครัว
It was the best film I had ever seen.
มันเป็นภาพยนตร์ที่ดีที่สุดที่ผมเคยชมมา
Johnson was the first director of the school.
จอห์นสันเป็นผู้อำนวยการคนแรกของโรงเรียน

2.12 ใช้ the เมื่อมีการเอ่ยถึงระบบ (system) หรือบริการ (service)
ตัวอย่าง
I spoke to her on the telephone yesterday.
เมื่อวานนี้ผมได้พูดคุยกับเธอทางโทรศัพท์
I heard the news on the radio.
ผมได้ฟังข่าวนี้มาจากวิทยุ
ข้อควรจำ ข้อความต่อไปนี้ไม่ใช้ทั้ง a, an หรือ the ได้แก่
to/at/from work to/at/from school/college to/at/from church at home/night out of/to/in bed at/for breakfast/lunch/dinner by car/bus/bicycle/plane/boat
