The man เราใช้ “he” แทน
The girl เราใช้ “she” แทน
The boys เราใช้ “they” แทน
หรือคำนามที่ขยายด้วยคำคุณศัพท์หลายคำ เราก็ใช้คำสรรพนามเพียงคำเดียวแทน เช่น
My first two good little new round grey French picture frames = they เป็นต้น

คำสรรพนาม แยกออกเป็นชนิดต่างๆ ได้ดังนี้

1. บุรุษสรรพนาม (Personal Pronoun)
2. สรรพนามแสดงความเป็นเจ้าของ (Possessive Pronoun)
3. สรรพนามชี้เฉพาะ (Demonstrative Pronoun)
4. สรรพนามสะท้อนกลับ (Reflexive Pronoun)
5. สรรพนามสร้างคำถาม (Interrogative Pronoun)
6. สรรพนามไม่ชี้เฉพาะ (Indefinite Pronoun)
7. สรรพนามเชื่อมความ (Relative Pronoun)
8. สรรพนามแจกแจง (Distributive Pronoun)
สรรพนามอาจแสดงถึง พจน์, บุรุษ, เพศ และการก ตารางบุรุษสรรพนามต่อไปนี้จะแสดงให้เห็นสิ่งดังกล่าว

1. บุรุษสรรพนาม (Personal Pronoun)

The boy hit the dog = He hit it.
The dog bit the boy = It bit him.
The girl read the books = She read them.
The books pleased the girl = They pleased her.

นอกจากนี้ ยังใช้รูปกรรมของบุรุษสรรพนามในกรณีที่เป็นกรรมของบุพบท (preposition Object) ด้วย เช่น
I spoke to him,
I had a letter from her.

คำสรรพนามเท่านั้นหรืออาจพูดได้ว่า เป็นคำกลุ่มเดียวในภาษาอังกฤษที่มีรูปต่างๆ ในการแสดงหน้าที่ประธาน และกรรม ซึ่งมีอยู่ด้วยกัน 6 คำ คือ

รูปประธาน

รูปกรรม

รูปประธาน

we

they

who

รูปกรรม

I

he

she

me

him

her

us

them

whom

ในภาษาเขียนหรือภาษาทางการ เมื่อบุรุษสรรพนามตามหลัง Verb to BE ต้องใช้รูปประธานเสมอ (Subjective Complement) เช่น
It was I (he, she, we, etc.) who did this.
ในภาษาพูดหรือภาษาไม่เป็นทางการ มักจะใช้รูปกรรมต่อท้าย Verb to BE เช่น That’s her (him, us, etc.)

แต่ในประโยคซึ่งรู้สึกว่าคำสรรพนามจะเป็นประธานของกิริยาให้ใช้รูปประธาน เช่น
It was he who told me about it, It was I who did it.

We believe that the government had made a profound mistake in imposing this tax.

ในภาษาพูด บางครั้ง “us” ใช้แทน “me” โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งในประโยคคำสั่ง เช่น
Let’s have a look หมายความว่า “let me have a look.”
Tell us what he said = Tell me what he said.

That’s the Queen’s yatch, Britannia; she’s a beautiful ship.    .
England has done what she promised to do.

“เด็กทารก” (a baby) ใช้ “it” แทนได้ แต่พ่อแม่ที่รักลูกจะไม่ค่อยพูดเช่นนั้น

“It”
1. คำสรรพนาม “it” มักจะใช้กับสิ่งของ แต่ไม่ใช้กับบุคคล แต่ “it” มักจะนำไปใช้กับคนที่ไม่รู้ว่าเป็นใคร ถ้าเมื่อรู้จักกันครั้งหนึ่งแล้ว จะใช้ “he หรือ she” แทน เช่น
Someone was moving stealthily about the room; it was a burglar. As we watched, he went to the safe and tried to open it.

2. “it” ใช้เป็นประธานตลอด เมื่อใช้กับกิริยาที่แสดงสภาพดินฟ้าอากาศ เช่น
It is raining/snowing/freezing.
It was a bitterly cold night and at ten o’clock.
It is very warm/cold/wet.
It began to blow a gale.

และใช้สำนวนเกี่ยวกับ “เวลา” และ “หน่วยวัด” เช่น
It is half past two.
It is fifteen miles to London.

และ “it” ยังใช้ในฐานะมิได้แทนบุคคลหรือสิ่งของหรือสัตว์ใดๆ ที่เรียกว่า “Impersonal Pronoun” แต่ใช้เป็นคำนำคำกล่าว เช่น
It says that Shakespeare’s plays were written by Bacon.

3. “it” ใช้เป็นประธานหรือกรรมเสนอในโครงสร้างที่ประธานหรือกรรมตัวจริงตามหลังมาในรูป Infinitive หรือ Subordinate Clause เช่น
It is easy enough to talk.
It was quite plain that he didn’t want to come.
I took it for granted that you would stay with us.
I find it difficult to believe that.

บางครั้งโครงสร้างเช่นนี้ ยังแสดงความหมายเน้นให้กับประธานตัวจริงที่ตามหลังมาด้วย เช่น
It was his mother, not his father, who said that.

4. “it” ยังใช้แบบสำนวนในประโยคหรือกลุ่มวลี (มักจะเป็นภาษาพูดหรือแสลง) ซึ่งแสดงความหมายไม่สำคัญอะไรนัก เช่น
Hang it all, we can’t wait all day for him, I’ll let him have it, hot and strong.

5. “it” อาจจะใช้แทนความทั้งประโยค เช่น
You have saved my life; I shall never forget it.
He is trying to win a scholarship to Oxford; he won’t find it easy.

แต่โครงสร้างเช่นนี้ ห้ามใช้ “it” หลังกิริยา know, remember, try, tell, forget เช่น “We are having a holiday tomorrow” “yes, I know.” (ไม่ใช่ “I know it.”)

“So”
1.. “so” ใช้เหมือนกับว่าแทนประโยคบอกเล่าทั้งประโยค โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งใช้หลังกิริยาต่อไปนี้: say, think, hope, believe, suppose, expect, hear, tell, imagine, fear, be afraid ซึ่งเหมือนกับ “it” ใช้แทนประโยคข้างต้น เช่น
Will George pass his examination? I think so.
You thought Henry stole the money; well, so he did.
We have information that the enemy will attack tonight.
And if so what are we going to do?

โครงสร้างรูปปฏิเสธข้างต้นอาจแสดงได้ 2 วิธี คือ
1.1 I think/believe/suppose/expect/hope/hear/am afraid/not หรือ if not
1.2 I don’t think/believe/suppose/expect/so.
จงสังเกตว่าในการสร้างโครงสร้างปฏิเสธแบบที่ 2 นั้นจะไม่ใช้กับกิริยา hepe และ be afraid

2. “so” ใช้กับ “Do” เพื่ออ้างถึงกิริยาที่อยู่ข้างหน้า
I told him to come and see me the next day, and he did so.
If you want me to help them I will do so.

3. “so” ใช้กับ “verb to BE” หรือ กิริยา “remain, seem แระ make” เพื่อแทนค่าคุณค่าศัพท์ หรือคำนามที่อยู่ข้างหน้า
He has been very helpful to me in the past and I hope he will be so in the future.

The country round my house has been unchanged for twenty years; may it long remain so.

He has been a teacher here for five years and I hope he will be so for many more years.

4. “so” ยังใช้ในความหมาย “ด้วยเหมือนกัน” (= also) เช่น
My husband likes French cooking and so do I.
Peter is working hard for his examination, and so is James.

“One”
“one” เคยทราบแล้วว่าเป็น “numeral Adjective” เช่น There was only one boy there, not two. แต่ในที่นี้ยังใช้เป็นคำสรรพนาม (Pronoun) ได้อีกด้วย เช่น
One cannot do the work of twenty. One of your brothers came to see me today.
ในกรณีเช่นนี้ รูปพหูพจน์ของ “one” คือ “some” เช่น
เอกพจน์: Take one of these chocolates.
พหูพจน์: Take some of these chocolates.

One can only do one’s best.
One can’t be too careful in matters like this.
I don’t think one should over work oneself.
ในประโยคต่อไปนี้เป็นการใช้ “one” ที่ค่อนข้างจะรุ่มร่าม
When one is given one’s choice of courses of action, any of which would be to one’s disadvantage, one often has a difficulty in deciding what one ought to do.
บางคนพยายามแก้ไขความรุ่มร่ามอันนี้ แต่มิได้ใช้ความรอบคอบพอสมควร จึงอาจเขียนเป็นดังนี้
When one is given his choice of courses of action, any of which would be to his disadvantage, they often have difficulty in deciding what they ought to do.

รูปการเขียนที่ดีควรเป็นดังนี้
1. When someone is given his choice of courses of action, any of which would be to his disadvantage, he often has difficulty in deciding what he ought to do.
หรือ
2. When you are given your choice of courses of action, any of which would be to your disadvantage, you often have difficulty in deciding what you ought to do.

2. “one” ปกติใช้แทน “บุคคลคนเดียว” ที่ไม่ชี้เฉพาะ เช่น
You are the first one who has ever explained this clearly.
He is not one to be easily frightened.

ใช้ “one” ในฐานะคำสรรพนามหรือคุณศัพท์
3. “one” ใช้กับคำบางคำเพื่อบอกจำนวนให้แตกต่างจากคำ “other หรือ another” เช่น
There are two choices open to you. You must take either the one or the other. (สรรพนาม)

The two twins are so much alike that I can’t tell the one from the other. (สรรพ,นาม)

One evening we went to the theatre, another evening we went dancing. (คุณศัพท์)

4. ในตัวอย่างต่อไปนี้ “one” มิได้มีความหมายบอกจำนวน แต่ใช้บอกเวลาที่ไม่แน่นอน เช่น
He always hopes that one day he will win the prize. (คุณศัพท์)
One of these days I’ll go and see him. (สรรพนาม)
I must have met him at one time or another. (คุณศัพท์)

5. บางครั้ง “one” มีความหมาย “แต่เพียงเท่านั้น’’ (= only, single) ซึ่งใช้เป็นคำคุณศัพท์ตลอด เช่น
The one man who could have saved the situation was dead.
No one woman could run a big house like that.

Brown’s old car is a good one; it’s much better than our new one.
There was an old man and a young one there.
I like a strong cup of tea better than a weak one.

และรูปพหูพจน์ของ “one” ในที่นี้คือ “ones” เช่น
I prefer red roses to white ones.
There was a mother bird in the nest and there were four young ones.

“one” สามารถใช้กับ “the” แทนนามชี้เฉพาะได้
A : “Which girl is Joan Robinson?”
B : “The one in the green dress.”
A : “Which biscuits do you like best?”
B : “The ones with chocolate on them.”

“one” จะไม่ใช้กับคำ “own” เลย เช่น
I can’t write properly with your pen; I’d rather use my own. (ไม่ใช้my own one.)

“ones” จะไม่ใช้กับ Cardinal Number เลย
You have three books; I have only two. (ไม่ใช้ two ones.)

การใช้ “one” ใน ลักษณะสำนวนต่างๆ
He can go or he can stay; it’s all one to me. (= ไม่มีผลอะไรสำหรับผม)
He was a man that was liked by one and all. (= ทุกคน)

2. สรรพนามแสดงความเป็นเจ้าของ (Possessive Pronouns)

Poss. Adj.

Poss. Pron.

Poss. Adj.

เช่น
That is my book. = That book is mine.
That is your book. = That book is yours.
That is his book. = That book is his.
That is her book. = That book is hers.
That is our book. = That book is ours.
That is their book. = That book is theirs.
History has its lessons and fiction has its.

ตัวอย่างอื่นๆ เช่น
Ours is the only garden in the lane that has oak tree in it.
Their house is older than yours.
He took the bone from his dog and gave it to hers.
I lend my books gladly to my friends and to yours.
Today we went in our car; tomorrow we are going in theirs.

รูป Possessive Pronoun “its” ไม่ค่อยได้ใช้ แต่สามารถใช้ได้ในประโยคเช่นนี้:-
The cherry tree gives its share of colour to the garden, and the lilac tree gives its.

รูป Possessive Pronoun อาจนำไปใช้ในกลุ่มวลีเช่นนี้
My best wishes to you and yours. (= your family) from me and mine. (= my family)
และใช้ในคำลงท้ายจดหมายแบบเป็นทางการ (Complimentary Close)
Yours sincerely/truly/faithfully หรือ Sincerely/truly/faithfully yours.

รูป Possessive ซ้ำซ้อน
มีรูปแบบการใช้ Possessive Pronoun อีกรูปหนึ่ง คือ of + Possessive Pronoun เช่น
He is a friend of mine. (ไม่ใช้ a friend of me.)
It was no fault of yours that we mistook the way.
I gave him some plants of mine in exchange for some of his.

หมายเหตุ ขอให้นำไปศึกษากับรูป Possessive ซ้ำซ้อนของคำนามด้วย

3. สรรพนามชี้เฉพาะ (Demonstrative Pronoun)
ได้กล่าวถึง Demonstrative Adj. มาครั้งหนึ่งแล้วในเรื่อง “Determinatives” (คำกำหนดนาม) คือ คำ “this, that” และรูปพหูพจน์ของมัน คือ “these และ those” ซึ่งจะต้องใช้ประกอบนามเสมอ เช่น
I want this car, not that car.
แต่ค่าเหล่านี้อาจใช้อยู่ตามลำพังโดยไม่ต้องมีคำนามต่อท้ายก็ได้ จะทำหน้าที่เป็น Demonstrative Pronoun เช่น

That’s an excellent idea.
This is my brother, and these are my two sisters.
My seat was next to that of the Major.
Compare Chopin’s waltzes with those of today.

คำสรรพนามเหล่านี้นอกจากจะอยู่ในตำแหน่งคำนามแล้วยังแสดงความหมายบอก ‘‘ตำแหน่งสถานที่ (position)” หรือ ‘‘กาลเวลา” (space or time)” โดยวัดจากตัวผู้พูด (Speaker) เป็นหลัก โดย “this, these” แสดงความหมายใกล้ตัวผู้พูด แต่ “That, Those” แสดงความหมายไกลออกไป เช่น
There is this seat here, near me, or there is that one in the fourth row.
Which will you have, this or that?
That is what I thought last year, this is what I think now.    /

คำ “the former และ the latter” อาจถูกใช้เป็น Demonstrative Pronouns ด้วย เช่น
The orchestra played two Beethoven Symphonies, The Third and the Fifth; The former was played magnificently; the latter was not so well done.

“Such”
“such” เป็นทั้ง Demonstrative Pronoun และ Demonstrative Adjective เช่น
I have had such a busy morning. (Adjective)
I never saw such wonderful stained glass as that of Chartres. (Adjective)
You shouldn’t say such things. (,Adjective)
It’s difficult to work indoors on such a lovely day. (Adjective)

ขอให้สังเกตว่า “a หรือ an” เมื่อใช้กับ “such” “a หรือ an” จะต้องอยู่หลัง “such” เสมอ และ “such” ใช้ประกอบทั้งนามเอกพจน์นับได้ นามพหูพจน์และนามนับไม่ได้

ตัวอย่าง “such” ใช้เป็น Demonstrative Pronoun เช่น
John is the captain of the team, and, as such, must decide who is the bad first.
His carelessness is such as to make it unlikely that he will pass the examination.
Such is life!

“such as” มีความหมาย “เช่น” (= for example)
They export a lot of fruit, such as oranges, lemons, etc.

“such as” ใช้กับ Verb to BE บางครั้งแสดงความหมาย “ดูถูก” หรือ “ออกตัวในเชิงขออภัย” เช่น
He gave me his help, such as it was. (= แต่ก็ไม่มีประโยชน์เท่าใดนัก)
I expect his friends, such as they are, will be at the party.
My services, such as they are, are entirely at your disposal.

4. สรรพนานสะท้อนกลับหรือเน้น (Reflexive Pronoun)
รูป Reflexive Pronoun สร้างโดยการเติม “-self” และรูปพหูพจน์ของมัน คือ “-selves” ที่ท้ายรูป Possessive Adjective สำหรับบุรุษที่ 1 และที่ 2 และที่ท้าย Objective Pronoun สำหรับบุรุษที่ 3 ดังนี้

Singular

Plural

1st person

2nd person

3rd person

myself

yourself

himself

herself

itself

oneself

ourselves

yourselves

themselves

สรรพนามชนิดนี้มี 2 หน้าที่ คือ
1. ในหน้าที่สะท้อนกลับ (Reflexive)
2. ในหน้าที่เน้น (Emphasizing)

สรรพนามสะท้อนกลับ (Reflexive Pronoun) หมายถึง การกระทำที่ผ่านไปจากประธานสะท้อนกลับมาประธานอีกครั้ง หรือพูดง่ายๆ ก็คือ “ผู้กระทำ” (Subject) กับ “ผู้ถูกกระทำ” (Object) คือ คนๆ เดียวกันนั่นเอง เช่น
I am teaching myself Latin.
He shaves himself every morning.
The visitors help themselves to the cakes.
She saw herself in the looking-glass.
One should try to see oneself as others see one.
It’s a pity we can’t see ourselves as others see us.

Reflexive Pronoun อาจมีเสียงเน้นหนัก (Strong stress) หรืออาจไม่ถูกเน้นหรือมีเสียงแผ่วเบา (Weak Stress) ขึ้นอยู่กับความหมายของประโยค ถ้าประโยคนั้นมีข้อความขัดแย้งกัน Reflexive Pronoun จะได้รับเสียงเน้นหนัก (Strong Stress) เช่น
She thinks only about herself, never of other people
Little Albert said, “I don’t need nurse to wash me; I can wash myself now.”

ประโยคต่อไปนี้ Reflexive Pronoun จะมีเสียงแผ่วเบา (Weak Stress)
Little Albert is only four, but he can feed himself, wash himself and dress himself.

Reflexive Pronoun อาจใช้ในกรณีต่อไปนี้
1. ใช้เป็นกรรมตรง (Direct Object) ดังเช่นในตัวอย่างที่แล้วๆ มา
2. ใช้เป็นกรรมรอง (Indirect Object) เช่น
You have given yourselves a great deal of work.
I told myself there was nothing to be afraid of.
He cooked himself a good meal.
She bought herself a new hat.

ข้อสังเกต ใช้ในโครงสร้าง S +V + Ind. O + D.O. นั่นเอง จงแปลว่า “กระทำอะไรให้ตนเอง”

3. ใช้ตามหลัง Verb to BE และในกรณีนี้จะมีเสียงเน้นหนัก (Strong Stress) เช่น
If he has a holiday at the seaside he will soon be himself.
Ah, that’s better. You are yourself again.

4. ใช้ตามหลัง Preposition (บุพบท) หรือในหน้าที่ Prepositional Object นั่นเอง เช่น
She looked at herself in the looking-glass.
What have you to say for yourself?
I want a little time to myself.
She loves me for myself, not for my money.
He ought to be ashamed of himself.
Speak for yourself.
George is very pleased with himself.

ถ้าประโยคไม่มีความหมายแสดงการกระทำสะท้อนกลับ Preposition Phrase เป็นเพียงทำหน้าที่ Adverb, เท่านั้น ให้ใช้รูป Objective Pronoun แทน เช่น
He took food for the day with him.
She shut the door behind her.
We have the whole day before us.
He put the thought from him.

บางครั้งรูป Reflexive Pronoun ใช้แทนรูป Objective Pronoun เพื่อเพิ่มความชัดเจนทางความหมาย เช่น
She suspected that they recognized her sister but not herself. (ตามความเป็นจริงใช้”her” เพราะเป็น Object ของกิริยา “recognized”)

บางครั้งการใช้รูป Reflexive Pronoun เพียงเพื่อแสดงความสุภาพ หรือผู้พูดไม่แน่ใจว่าควรจะใช้คำ “I” หรือ “me” เช่น
My wife and myself were invited to the party.
There was an invitation to my wife and myself.

บางครั้ง Reflexive Pronoun โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่ง “myself’ ถูกใช้แทนบุรุษสรรพนามธรรมดา เช่น
My brother is as old as myself. (ควรใช้ “I”)
No one realizes that more than myself. (ควรใช้”I”)

คำกิริยาที่ใช้กับ Reflexive Pronouns
มีกิริยาอยู่ 2-3 คำที่ใช้กับรูป Reflexive Pronoun เสมอ เช่น
I pride myself on always having a tidy garden.
He availed himself of the opportunity to speak to her.
All the students absented themselves from the class.

กิริยาบางคำใช้กับรูป Reflexive Pronoun ในความหมายบางอย่าง
I hope the children will behave themselves.
They acquitted themselves well.
I hope you will enjoy yourself at the party.
He applied himself to the task of organizing.
The finances of the Company.

กิริยา “behave, acquit, enjoy, apply”
ใช้ไม่กระทบ Reflexive Pronoun ก็ได้ เช่น
The judge acquitted the prisoner.
I enjoyed the concert very much.
He applied a hot poultice to the sore foot.
The children behaved very well.

บางครั้ง Reflexive Pronoun ใช้ในความหมาย “ซึ่งกันและกัน”
They were busy arguing among themselves. (= with each other)

ต่อไปนี้เป็นการใช้ Reflexive Pronoun ในลักษณะเน้น (Emphasizing) ซึ่งจะมีเสียงเน้นหนัก (Strong Stress) อย่างยิ่งที่คำ Reflexive Pronoun เพื่อแสดงความหมายขัดแย้ง เช่น
You yourself (=ไม่ใช้ใครอื่น) told me the story.

ข้อสังเกต การใช้ Reflexive Pronoun ในลักษณะเน้น มักจะวางคำ Reflexive Pronoun หลังคำที่มันเน้นเสมอ แต่อาจวางไว้ท้ายประโยคก็ได้ เช่น
I myself saw him do it. = I saw him do it myself.
The Duke himself piloted the plane. = The Duke piloted the plane himself.

บางครั้ง Reflexive Pronoun ความหมายเน้น อาจนำมาใช้ในสำนวน “by oneself” = alone (ตามลำพัง, ไม่มีใครช่วยเหลือ) เช่น
This is a machine that works by itself.
The little girl travelled from London to New York by herself.

“all” อาจนำมาใช้กับโครงสร้างเช่นนี้เพื่อเน้นความหมายยิ่งขึ้น เช่น Don’t you feel lonely living here all by yourself?

เมื่อใช้ในความหมาย “ไม่มีใครช่วยเหลือ” อาจละ “by” ก็ได้ เช่น
He tried to move the piano into the other room (by) himself, but couldn’t manage it.

5. สรรพนามสร้างคำถาม (Interrogative Pronoun)
สรรพนามสร้างคำถาม (Interrogative Pronoun) มีดังนี้ who, (whom, whose) which, what เป็นคำที่ใช้สร้างประโยคคำถาม และจะอยู่หน้ากิริยาเสมอ เช่น

ข้อสังเกต ถ้าใช้เป็นประธานของประโยค อาจใช้กิริยาเพียงคำเดียวได้เลย แต่ถ้าใช้เป็นกรรม จะต้องมีกิริยาช่วย (Helping Verbs) 1 ตัวต่อท้ายเสมอ

Interrogative Pronoun จะไม่มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงรูปตามเพศหรือพจน์ ฉะนั้นคำตอบของคำถามที่สร้างด้วยคำเหล่านี้ จึงเป็นเพศใดหรือพจน์ใดก็ได้ เช่น
คำถาม : Who broke the window?
คำตอบ : อาจเป็น “Henry” หรือ “Mary” หรือ “Henry and Mary”
คำถาม : Here are some apples; which would you like?
เราอาจยื่น แอปเปิ้ลให้ลูกหนึ่งหรือมากกว่า 1 ลูก ถ้าเราต้องการให้จำนวนของ “which” ชัดเจนยิ่งขึ้นควรใช้ “which” ประกอบกับคำ “one” หรือ “ones”
เช่น
“Here are some apples; which one would you like?” (Singular) หรือ
“Here are some apples; which ones would you like? (plural)

นอกจากนี้ Interrogative Pronoun ยังถูกนำไปใช้สร้างคำถามอ้อม (Indirect Questions) ด้วย (คำถามจากตัวอย่างทั้งหลายเรียกว่า “คำถามตรง”) (Direct Questions) เช่น
“What happened after that?” (Direct)
“He asked me what had happened after that.” (Indirect)
“Who is going to the party?” (Direct)
He asked me who was going to the party. (Indirect)

ข้อสังเกต  เมื่อสร้างเป็น Indirect Questions “Interrogative Pronoun” จะย้ายมาอยู่กลางประโยค ซึ่งเปลี่ยนหน้าที่ทางไวยากรณ์มาเป็นตัวเชื่อม (Relative) ของ Clause ซึ่งจะได้กล่าวต่อไปในเรื่อง Relative Pronoun

“Who”
“Who” ใช้กับบุคคลเท่านั้น อาจเป็นเอกพจน์หรือพหูพจน์ และอาจใช้แทนนามเพศชายและนามเพศหญิง เช่น
“Who spilt the ink?” “Henry did.”
“Who can answer that question?” “Mary can.”

“Who” คือ รูปประธาน ส่วน “Whom” คือรูปกรรม เช่น
“Who(m) did you see?”  “I saw George”
O       H.V.    S              V
“To whom did you give the letter?”
prep O                S     V        D.O.
Who (m) did you give the letter to?

They gave him the prize.
รูป Possessive ของ “who” คือ “whose” เช่น
Whose are those gloves and whose is this umbrella?

“What”
“What” มักใช้กับสิ่งของ เป็นได้ทั้งเอกพจน์และพหูพจน์ เป็นทั้งประธานและกรรมของประโยค และไม่มีรูป Possessive เช่น What is this? What are those strange objects? ความแตกต่างระหว่าง “who” (สำหรับบุคคล) และ “what” (สำหรับสิ่งของ) จะสังเกตได้ชัดจากประโยคต่อไปนี้
Who broke the window? และ What broke the window?
Whom did you see? และ What did you see?

“What” อาจใช้แทนพฤติกรรม (Activity) หรือการกระทำ (Action) ในกรณีเช่นนี้คำตอบของคำถาม จะเป็นคำกิริยาในรูปต่างๆ
“What are you doing?” “I’m cleaning the car?”
“What’s that thing for?” “It’s for punching holes in paper.”
“What have you done?” “I’ve knocked the vase off the table.”

“What” ยังถูกนำไปใช้ถามเกี่ยวกับอาชีพ (Profession) ด้วย เช่น
คำถาม : “What is that man talking to your father?”
คำตอบ : “He is a lawyer/a gardener/a Member of Parliament.

ข้อสังเกต ถ้าถามด้วย “who” จะตอบด้วยชื่อ เช่น
A : Who is that man talking to your father?
B : He is Mr. Brown.

การแสตงเจตนาของการถาม “who และ what” จะเห็นได้ในประโยคนี้
I don’t know who or what he is; and I don’t care.

ขอให้สังเกตด้วยว่าโครงสร้างคำถาม “What……like? นั้น ต้องการคำตอบอีกลักษณะหนึ่ง เช่น

A : What is he like?
B : He’s tall, dark and handsome. หรือ
A : What’s he like as a pianist?
B : Oh, he’s not very good. หรือ
A : What’s his work like?
B : It’s quite good.

A : What is he like?B : He’s tall, dark and handsome. หรือA : What’s he like as a pianist?B : Oh, he’s not very good. หรือA : What’s his work like?B : It’s quite good.

“Which”
“Which” ใช้กับบุคคลและสิ่งของ เป็นเอกพจน์และพหูพจน์เป็นทั้งประธานและกรรมของประโยค และไม่มีรูป Possessive  เช่น
Which is your book? (Singular)
S            V                C
Which are your books? (Plural)
Which do you like best?
O           H.V.       S        V E

ข้อแตกต่างระหว่าง “what” และ “which”
“what” ใช้ในความหมายที่เราจะเลือกของต่างๆ จากจำนวนที่ไม่กำหนด แต่ “which” จะมีความหมายให้เลือกจากจำนวนที่กำหนด และการเลือกที่ใช้ “which” จะแสดงให้ชัดเจนยิ่งขึ้นด้วยโครงสร้าง “Which of” เช่น
Which of your boys can’t do this exercise?
Which will you have, tea or coffee?
A : What are you taking in your examination?
B :    I’m taking English, French, and German.
A : Which of them is your best subject?
B :    English.
A : What would you like to study in next year’s literature course?
B :    A Shakespear’s play
A : Very good; which would you like?
B :    Macbeth.

ข้อแตกต่างระหว่าง “who” และ “which”
จงสังเกตความแตกต่างทางความหมายของคำทั้งสองจากประโยคต่อไปนี้
Who would like to come for a game of football?
Which of you would like to come for a game of football?

สำหรับคำถาม “who” ผู้พูดพร้อมที่จะพาทุกคนที่ต้องการจะมาดูฟุตบอล แต่คำถาม “which” ผู้พูดจะพาไปเพียงจำนวนหนึ่งเท่านั้น

Interrogative Adjectives

หรือ “What sort of?” เช่น

What kind of chocolates do you like best?
What sort of a girl is she?

“Which”
Which boy (girl) has (which boys/girls/have) answered correctly all the questions?
Which eye was injured, his right or his left?

ข้อแตกต่างระหว่าง “what” และ “which” ในฐานะ Interrogative Pronoun ซึ่งได้ยกตัวอย่างให้เห็นแล้ว จะมีความหมายแตกต่างลักษณะเดียวกันเมื่อใช้ในฐานะ Interrogative Adjective เช่น
A : What subjects are you taking in your examination?
B : English, French and German.
A : What play would you like to study next term?
B : One of Shakspeare’s
A : Very good; which play would you like?
B : Macbeth.

รูปเน้นของ Interrogative Pronoun
จะเติม “-ever” ที่ท้ายคำ Interrogative Pronoun “what, who, which” เพื่อแสดงความหมายเน้นเกี่ยวกับความรู้สึกประหลาดใจ, โกรธ และไม่พอใจ เช่น
Who ever can be calling at this time of night?
Who ever heard of such a silly idea?
What ever were you thinking of to suggest such a plan?

การใช้ในลักษณะสำนวน
มีสำนวนบางอันที่ประกอบด้วย “who, which, what” (ไม่จำเป็นต้องเป็นประโยคคำถาม) เช่น
What about a cigarette/something to eat? (= would you like; shall we have……?)
Oh! there’s Mr. What’s-his-name ใช้พูดเมื่อจำชื่อไม่ได้
It’s a what-do-you-call-it.
It was so dark that I couldn’t tell who was who.
The two twins are so alike that I can’t tell which is which (หรือ who is who)
I don’t know anyone at this party; you must tell me who’s who.
You’ll find his name in Who’s Who. (= หนังสือรวมชีวประวัติบุคคล)
He’s a clever fellow; he knows what’s what.

6. สรรพนามไม่ชี้เฉพาะ (Indefinite Pronouns)
กลุ่มของ-Indefinitive Pronouns มีดังนี้
some (thing; -body: -one), any (thing, -body, -one) all, one, none, no (-thing, -body, -one), every (thing, -body, -one) other, another, much, less, (a) few, (a) little, enough, each, either, neither.

หลายคำในกลุ่มนี้ใช้เป็นคำคุณศัพท์ได้ ซึ่งได้ผ่านมาแล้วในเรื่อง “Determinatives” (คำกำหนดนาม) เช่น
Have you any matches? (Adj.)
Ask John if he has any. (Pron.)
I wish I had some red roses. (Adj.)
I must try, to grow some next year. (Pron.)
The notice said. “All boys must be in school by 9 o’clock.” (Adj.)
But all were not there at 9 o’clock. (Pron.)
We all life Mr.Thompson very much. (Pron)
He told me a lot of other things that I can’t remember now. (Adj.)
Which one are you going to choose, that one or the other? (Pron.)
At the party each child was given an orange and a bag of sweets. (Adj.)
Each of them was also given a present from the Christmas tree. (Pron.)

Either of these machines is suitable for the work you want done. (Pron.)

Neither of my friends has come yet. (Pron.)

There is a train at 11:30 and one at 12:05. either train will get you to Oxford in time for the meeting. (Adj.)

If you don’t want either of those, there is another one at 10:30. (Pron.)

I have travelled by the 11:30 train and the 12:05 and neither train had a restaurant car. (Adj.)

I am very surprised that neither of them had a restaurant car. (Pron.)

“either” บางครั้งหมายถึง “สิ่งหนึ่งและอีกสิ่งหนึ่งใน 2 สิ่ง,’
He came down the road with a girl on either arm.
“On either side of the river, lie.
Long fields of barley and of rye.” (Tennyson)

“all”
“all” ใช้เป็นทั้ง Pronoun และ Adjective และในความหมายเอกพจน์หรือพหูพจน์ เช่น ใช้ในความหมายเอกพจน์
1. เป็น Pronoun หมายถึง “ทุกสิ่งทุกอย่าง’’ (= everything)
When he saw his troops retreat, the General cried,
“All is lost.”
“All’s well that ends well.”
“All is not gold that glitters.

2. เป็น Adjective หมายถึง “จำนวนทั้งหมด เช่น
All the money is spent.
All the world has heard of his name.
He worked hard all the time he was here.
He spent all last week in London.

ใช้ในความหมายพหูพจน์ เป็นทั้ง Pronoun และ Adjective
All the pupils were present. (Adj.)
All are welcome. (Pron.)
I don’t like to speak before all these people. (Adj.)
He has written six novels and all of them are good. (Pron.)

เมื่อประธานของประโยคเป็นคำนาม “all” จะวางไว้ข้างหน้าหรือตามหลังคำนามก็ได้ เช่น
All the students agreed that the concert was good.
The students all agreed that the concert was good.

แต่ถ้าประธานของประโยคเป็นคำสรรพนาม “all” จะต้องวางไว้ข้างหลังคำสรรพนามเสมอ
They all agreed that the concert was good.

“all และ every”
“all” มักจะมีความหมายเหมือนกับ “every” (= ทุกสิ่งทุกอย่าง) แต่โครงสร้างจะต่างกัน
all = Plural Verb นั่นคือ all + Plural Noun

แต่ every + Singular Verb นั่นคือ every + Singular Noun
That’s the sort of job that all boys like doing.
That’s the sort of job that every boy likes doing,
The explosion broke all the windows in the street.
The explosion broke every window
All the people were cheering loudly.
Everybody was cheering loudly.

นอกจากนี้ ความหมายของคำทั้ง 2 ยังแตกต่างกันด้วย เช่น
All the boys were present.

เราพิจารณาเด็กๆ ในลักษณะเป็นกลุ่ม (mass) แต่
Every boy was present.
เรากำลังคิดถึงเด็กแต่ละคนในจำนวนหลายๆ คน ที่มาประกอบกันเป็นกลุ่ม

นอกจาก “all” จะใช้เป็น Pronoun และ Adjective แล้วยังใช้ “all” ในลักษณะ Adverb ได้อีกด้วย เช่น
“each, every (-one, -body)”
“each” และ “every” ยังใช้ในความหมายบอกจำนวนรวม (Totality) ด้วย และมักจะเรียกว่า “Distributives” (ความหมายแจกแจง) “each” ใช้เป็น Pronoun และ Determinative Adjective แต่ “every” ใช้เป็น Adjective เท่านั้น จึงต้องสร้างรูป Pronoun ของมันขึ้น คือ “everyone, everybody, everything” “each” ใช้เมื่อจำนวนเต็มนั้นคือ “2 หรือมากกว่า 2 ขึ้นไป” ส่วน “every” ใช้เมื่อจำนวนเต็ม “มากกว่า 2 ขึ้นไป”ใช้ “each” เป็น Pronoun
Each must do his best.
They each signed the papers.
Mr. Brown came to the school with a bag of apples, and gave the boys two each.
Each of the boys has done his work.

ใช้’ “each” เป็น Adjective
Each man must do his best.
Each person signed the paper.
He gave each boy two apples.
Before choosing a pen, she looked at each one in turn.

ใช้ “every” เป็น Adjective
Every man must do his best.
Every person signed the paper.
He gave every boy two apples.
Every one of the boys has done his work.
“Every cloud has a silver lining” (สุภาษิต)

รูปสรรพนามของ “every”
Everyone knows that Rome is the capital of Italy.
He told everyone that he was a lord.
Everybody was disappointed that you could not come.
Everything he says is true.
Everything in the house was destroyed by fire.

จงสังเกตว่า “each, every, everyone, everybody, everything” จะใช้กับ Singular Verb เสมอ

และจงสังเกตรูป “everyone” กับ “every one” ว่าใช้แตกต่างกัน คือ “everyone” ใช้กับบุคคลเท่านั้น แต่ “every one” ยังสามารถนำไปใช้กับสิ่งของ (นอกจากบุคคล) ได้ด้วย เช่น
She has kept every one of.my letters.

“each และ every”

I visited him every day while he was in hospital. และ
I visited him each day while he was in hospital.
(จะเห็นว่าประโยคใช้ “each” มีความหมายเน้นมากกว่า “every”)

“every” ยังใช้ในลักษณะสำนวนได้ด้วย เช่น
The cheaper paper is every bit as good as the dealer one.
He is every inch a man.
You have every right to be angry.
There is every reason to think he is speaking the truth.

ในกรณีข้างต้นนี้ จะใช้ “each” แทน “every” ไม่ได้เลย และรวมทั้งกลุ่มวลีต่อไปนี้ด้วย
“every other day” “every two days” “every now and then” สำหรับ “every other day” ใช้ได้ 2 ความหมาย ซึ่งในภาษาพูดจะใช้เสียงเน้นหนัก (Stress) ที่คำดังนี้
1. ถ้าเน้นหนักตรง “day” คือ “every other day” หมายความว่า “วันเว้นวัน” เช่น
“I go there every other day.” = I go there on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

2. ถ้าเน้นหนักตรง “other” คือ “every other day” หมายความว่า “ทุกวันอื่น” เช่น
“We have a lesson on Monday, but on every other day there are no lessons.” = There are no lessons on all the other days.

“both”
“both” เหมือนคำ “all” ใช้เป็นทั้ง Pronoun และ Adjective มีความหมายบอก “จำนวนเต็ม” (Totality) แต่ “both” ใช้ในความหมาย “จำนวน 2 คน หรือ 2 สิ่ง” เท่านั้น และใช้กับคำนามพหูพจน์เท่านั้น จึงต้องตามด้วยกิริยารูปพหูพจน์เช่นกัน
“both” ใช้เป็นคำสรรพนาม
I have two brothers; they are both engineers.
I don’t know which book is the better; I shall read both.
“Which of the two girls is he in love with?”

“Both!”
“both” ใช้เป็นคำคุณศัพท์
Both his legs were broken in the accident.
There are houses on both sides of the street.
Both (the) men were found guilty.

“both” ยังใช้เป็น Adverb ในประโยคต่อไปนี้
The book is both useful and amusing.

some (-thing, -body, -one)

(Weak Stress)

2. แต่ถ้าใช้ “some” ในลักษณะแสดงความหมายขัดแย้ง (Contrast) “some” จะมีเสียงเน้นหนัก (Strong Stress) ด้วย เช่น
Some people hate cats; others dislike dogs.
I enjoy some music, but much of it bores me.
Some of us agree with that statement; some disagree.
Not all your answers were correct; some were, some were not.

3. ถ้าใช้เป็น Adjective สามารถนำไปประกอบนามเอกพจน์นับได้ (Singular Countable Noun) ก็ได้ แต่จะมีความหมาย “หมายเฉพาะแต่สิ่งนั้นซึ่งไม่ปรากฎชัด” (มักจะเป็นความหมายในทางไม่ดี) ซึ่งงในกรณีนี้เวลาพูด “some” จะมีเสียงเน้นหนัก (Strong Stress) เช่น
Some fool had left the lawn-mower on the garden path, and in the dark I fell over it.
He arrived with some old book that he had picked up at a second hand book shop.

“something” และ “some” (เสียงเน้นหนัก) ซึ่ง “some” จะประกอบใช้กับจำนวนเลขด้วย จะมีความหมาย “โดยประมาณ” เช่น
I’ll whistle the tune for you; it goes something like this.
It happened some twenty years ago.
It will take some three or four thousand pounds to rebuild the house.

“any (-thing, -body, -one)
1. “any” ใช้ในความหมายเน้น จะมีความหมายกว้างๆ “ไม่ชี้เฉพาะเจาะจง” หรือ “อะไรก็ได้” เช่น
Come any day you like.
Get me some cigarettes, please; any kind will do.
Any student can answer the question.
He is a man who will do anything for money.
You must give an excuse for not going; any excuse will do.
I have any number of (= a great many) small plants in my garden; I will give you as many as you want.

2. “any” ใช้ในความหมายไม่เน้น จะมีความหมายเหมือน “some” ที่ใช้ในลักษณะ 1 (ดูการใช้ “some”)

3. “any” ใช้กับนามเอกพจน์นับได้ นามนับไม่ได้ และนามพหูพจน์ เช่น Any sane person would have acted as you did.
Haven’t you any work to do?
Are there any cows in the field?

4.  “any” ใช้เป็น Adverb ในประโยคต่อไปนี้:-
I am sorry to say he isn’t any better.
I couldn’t come any sooner.
In spite of your careful explanation, I don’t think he is any the wiser.

“some และ any”
จงสังเกตความแตกต่างทางความหมายระหว่างคำ 2 คำ ในประโยคต่อไป
Richard is older than some of the other boys in his class.(= เขาไม่ใช่คนอายุน้อยที่สุดและก็ไม่ใช่คนอายุมากที่สุด)
Richard is older than any of the other boys in his class. (= เขาเป็นคนที่มีอายุมากที่สุด)
That firm does more business than some of its competitors. (= มากกว่าจำนวนหนึ่งแต่ไม่ใช่ทั้งหมด)
That firm does more business than any of its competitors. (= มากกว่าทั้งหมด)

ความแตกต่างระหว่าง “some” และ “any” แบบง่ายๆ โดยทั่วไปก็คือ “some” ใช้ในประโยคบอกเล่า (Affirmative Sentence) และ “any” ใช้ในประโยคคำถาม (Interrogative Sentence) และประโยคปฏิเสธ (Negative Sentence) เช่น
I am looking for some matches.
Have you any matches?
I haven’t any matches.
There is someone in the room.
Is there anyone in the room?
There isn’t anyone in the room?
There’s something I want to ask you.
Is there anything you want to ask me?
There isn’t anything I want to ask you.

ความหมายปฏิเสธอาจจะแสดงด้วยคำ “never, without, seldom etc.” ฉะนั้น “any” จะต้องใช้กับประโยคเช่นนี้ด้วย เช่น
He never had any luck.
He worked hard but without any success.

บางครั้งความหมายคำถามจะแสดงด้วยประโยคเงื่อนไข จึงใช้ “any” ในกรณีนี้เช่นกัน เช่น
If there are any good apples in the shop, bring me two pounds.
ยิ่งกว่านั้น “some” ยังถูกนำไปใช้กับประโยคคำถาม ในกรณีที่ผู้ถามหวังคำตอบ “yes” เช่น
Didn’t you put some matches in your pocket? หมายความว่า “ฉันเกือบแน่ใจว่าฉันเห็นเธอเอาไม้ขีดใส่กระเป๋า” ซึ่งมีความหมายเหมือนกับ Question-tag
You put some matches in your pocket, didn’t you?
(จงทำความเข้าใจประกอบกับในเรื่อง Question-tag)

คำถาม “Are you expecting someone this afternoon?
เป็นการถามต้องการคำตอบ “yes” ถ้าต้องการคำตอบ “No” คำถามจะเป็นดังนี้
Are you expecting anyone this afternoon ?
เช่นเดียวกัน
Is someone coming this afternoon? (= ผมแน่ใจเพราะผมเห็นคุณกำลังเตรียมอะไรอยู่)
Have you lost something? (= ผมแน่ใจเพราะผมเห็นคุณกำลังค้นหาอยู่)
ลักษณะเช่นนี้อาจนำไปประยุกต์ใช้กับ Adverb “somewhere, anywhere” เช่น
Have you seen him before somewhere? (= ดูคุณเหมือนจะรู้จักเขา)

นอกจากนี้ ถ้าประโยคคำถาม มีความหมายทำนองขอร้อง เชื้อเชิญ หรือ คำสั่ง ให้ใช้ “some” เช่น
Will you ask someone to carry this bag for me, please?
May I give you some more tea?
Won’t you try some of this cake?
Could you let me have some money, father?

“no, nothing, nobody, no one, none”
คำกำหนดนาม “no” ใช้ในลักษณะ Attributive เท่านั้น และมีความหมาย “ไม่มีเลย” (= not any) เช่น
There is no (there isn’t any) salt on the table, and no (there aren’t any) glasses.
“No smoking allowed.”
“no” มีความหมายเท่ากับ “not a” ในประโยค เช่น He is no hero.
“nothing” สามารถแทนด้วยคำ “not anything ส่วน nobody (หรือ no one) สามารถแทนด้วยคำ “not anybody (-one) ยกเว้นเมื่อ “nothing หรือ nobody หรือ no one เป็นประธานของประโยค
There was nothing (= wasn’t anything) in the shop that I wanted to buy.
Can no one (= Can’t anyone) answer the question?
There’s nobody (=There isn’t anybody) in the room.

“nobody และ no one” ใช้สำหรับบุคคล แต่ “none” ใช้สำหรับทั้งบุคคลและสิ่งของ เช่น
No one came to the class. There was nobody in the room.
I wanted some more coffee but there was none left.

“none” เป็น Pronoun และมีความหมายเท่ากับ “not one” หรือ “not any” (= ไม่มีเลย) เช่น
None of his pupils failed their examination.
“How many fish did you catch?” “None.”
“None so blind as those who will not see” (สุภาษิต)

“nobody, nothing และ no one” เป็นเอกพจน์จึงใช้กับกิริยาเอกพจน์ ส่วน “none” ใช้กับกิริยาเอกพจน์หรือพหูพจน์ก็ได้ เช่น
None of us is perfect; we all make mistakes.
“There are none so deaf as those who will not hear.” (สุภาษิต)

“none” ใช้กับกิริยาเอกพจน์นั้น นักไวยากรณ์ส่วนใหญ่เห็นว่าถูกต้องมากกว่าที่จะใช้กับกิริยาพหูพจน์
“none, nothing, nobody, no one” มักจะใช้เพื่อเป็นคำตอบย่อ (Short answers) เช่น
“How-many of the exercises did you get right?” “None.”

กล่าวโดยทั่วไปแล้ว ความแตกต่างระหว่าง “nothing” และ “none” ก็คือ ในการตอบย่อนั้น “nothing” เป็นคำตอบของคำถาม ที่ขึ้นต้นด้วย “What” ส่วน “none” เป็นคำตอบของคำถามที่ขึ้นต้นด้วย “How many” หรือ “How much”
และ “nobody หรือ no one” เป็นคำตอบของคำถามที่ขึ้นต้นด้วย “Who” เช่น
“What is on the table?” “Nothing.”
“How many books are on the table?” “None”
“Who is in the dining-room?” “Nobody” (no one)
“How much petrol is there in the car?” “None”

“no, something, nothing” สามารถใช้ในลักษณะ Adverb ด้วย เช่น He is no better and is still very ill.
It is no faster to go there by train than by car.
No sooner had I let the cat out of the room than she wanted to come in again.
He is something like what his father was at that age.
Your work is nothing like so good as Henry’s.

หมายเหตุ น่าประหลาดที่ “no” เมื่อใช้เป็น Adverb มักจะประกอบกับคุณศัพท์รูปขั้นกว่า (ดังตัวอย่าง 3 ประโยคแรก) จะไม่ใช้กับคุณศัพท์รูปขั้นธรรมดา (ยกเว้น 2 คำคือ “no different และ no good”) และคุณศัพท์ขั้นสูงสุดเลย

“other, another”
He held a sword in one hand and a pistol in the other.
One of my brothers is named Richard, the other is named Frederick.
When we got to that round about we ought to have taken the other road.

“The other (s)” หมายถึง “remaining” (= สิ่งที่ค้าง) เช่น
We got home by 6 o’clock, but the others didn’t get back until about 8 o’clock.
The other guests that we had expected didn’t come.
“other (s)” อาจหมายความว่า “different” (= ต่างๆ) หรือ “additional” (= อีก) หรือ “remaining” (=สิ่งที่ค้าง) เช่น
There are other ways of doing this exercise.
I have no other friend but you.
Some like milk chocolate, others prefer plain chocolate.

“another” มีความหมาย ดังนี้
1. “เพิ่มทีละหนึ่ง” (an additional one) เช่น
Joe is terribly greedy; his hostess offered him another cake but he took one cake, then another and another.
Mr. Brown already has two cars, and now he has bought another.

2. “อีกสิ่งหนึ่ง” (a different one) เช่น
The point of this pencil is broken; can you lend me another, please?
On one day he will say one thing and on another day something quite different.

“each other, one another”
“each other” และ “one another” จะใช้ตามหลังสกรรมกิริยา (Transitive Verbs) เพื่อแสดงความหมาย “ร่วมกัน” นั่นคือ มีความรู้สึกและการกระทำร่วมกัน

นักไวยากรณ์ให้ข้อสังเกตว่า “each other” นั้นมีความเกี่ยวข้องกันเพียง 2 คน เช่น The two sisters love each other.
และ “one another” จะมีคนมากกว่า 2 คนขึ้นไปเกี่ยวข้องกัน เช่น Little children love one another.

นอกจากนี้ “each other” และ “one another” ยังใช้ตามหลังบุพบทได้ด้วย (Preposition Object) เช่น
They gave presents to each other.
They are very fond of one another.

7. Relative Pronoun (สรรพนามทำหน้าที่เป็นตัวเชื่อม)
Relative Pronoun คือ “who” (รูปประธาน) “whom” (รูปกรรม) “whose” (รูปแสดงความเป็นเจ้าของ), “which”, “that”, “as” และ “but” ทุกคำเป็นทั้งรูปเอกพจน์และพหูพจน์ทั้งเพศชายและเพศหญิง

“Relative Pronoun” “who” และ “which” จะไม่มีเสียงเน้นหนักเหมือนกับที่มันถูกใช้ในลักษณะ “Interrogative Pronoun”

หลักการใหญ่ๆ ที่จะใช้ Relative Pronoun เหล่านี้ก็คือนำไปสร้าง Adjective Clause (ขอให้ศึกษาประกอบกับเรื่อง Adjective Clauses)

“who”, “whom” และ “whose”
“who”, “whom” แระ “whose” จะใช้กับบุคคล (persons) เช่น
The man who spoke was my brother.
He is one of the men whom I feel I can trust.
He is a man whose word is as good as his bond.

“which” ใช้สำหรับสิ่งของ (Things) และสัตว์ (animals) เท่านั้น
The current, which is very rapid, makes the river dangerous.
The dog which was lost has been found.
แต่ถ้าสัตว์ถูกตั้งชื่อจะถือเหมือนว่าเป็นบุคคล “who” จะถูกนำมาใช้ในกรณีเช่นนี้
Our dog, Jock, who had been lost for two days, was found and brought home by a policeman.

ถ้าใช้กับ Collective Nouns ซึ่งเป็นบุคคลและมีความหมายเป็นเอกพจน์ จะใช้ “which” แต่ถ้ามีความหมายเป็นพหูพจน์จะใช้ “who (m)” เช่น
The London team, which played so well last season, has done badly this season.
The team, who are just getting their tickets, will meet on the platform at 2:30.

แต่จะใช้ “which” เมื่อ Antecedent เป็นประโยคทั้งประโยค
He invited us to dinner, which was very kind of him.

“That”
“that” ไม่มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงไป (เป็นทั้งประธานและกรรม เอกพจน์และพหูพจน์) และใช้กับ Antecedent ที่เป็นบุคคลหรือสิ่งของ และเมื่อใช้ในกรณีเป็น Relative Pronoun เช่นนี้ จะไม่มีเสียงเน้นหนัก Shakespeare is the greatest poet that England has ever had.
The plays that he wrote have been performed in almost every country in the world.
They live in a house that was built in 1600.
Have you everything that you need?

“that” (ไม่ใช่ “who” หรือ which”) จะใช้ในกรณีต่อไปนี้
1. ใช้หลังคำ Adjective ขั้นสูงสุด (รามทั้งคำ “first” และ “last”) และหลัง Indefinite Pronoun ส่วนใหญ่
Yesterday was one of the coldest days that I have ever known.

His book is the best that has ever been written on that subject, and yet you say this is the first time that you have heard of it.

He never says anything that is worth listening to.

There’s not much that can be done.

2. ใช้ในประโยคที่ขึ้นต้นด้วย “It is….” “It was    ……” และในประโยคคำถามที่เกี่ยวข้องกันลักษณะเช่นนี้
“It’s an ill wind that blows nobody good.” (สุภาษิต)
It is the teacher that is important, not the kind of school he teaches in.
What was it that he wanted?
In which play of Shakespeare’s is it that Viola appears?
Was it you that broke the window?

3. เมื่อ Antecedent มีทั้งบุคคลและสิ่งของ เช่น
He talked brilliantly of the men and the books that interested him.

“that” จะไม่ใช้ใน Non-defining clause เลย และจะมี Preposition วางไว้ข้างหน้าไม่ได้เด็ดขาด (แต่ “which” และ “whom” มี Prep อยู่ข้างหน้าได้)

Preposition จะต้องวางไว้ท้าย Clause เสมอ
Here is the car about which I told you.
Here is the car that I told you about.

“that” ใช้ตามหลัง “same” ได้ เช่น
She wore the same dress that she wore at Mary’s wedding.

แต่ Relative Pronoun ที่ใช้ตามหลัง “same” และ “such” คือ “as” เช่น
I shall be surprised if he does this in the same way as I do.
She wears the same kind of clothes as her sister usually does.
I never heard such stories as he tells.

“What”
“what” จะใช้เมื่อคำ Antecedent ไม่ปรากฏหรือพูดได้ว่า “what” เป็นทั้ง Relative Pronoun และ Antecedent ในคำเดียวกัน (ดูเรื่อง Noun Clause ประกอบ) เช่น
Tell me what you want to know.

ประโยคข้างต้นนี้อาจเขียนได้ดังนี้อีกแบบหนึ่ง
Tell me the things which you want to know.

“what” จะถูกนำไปใช้ในกรณีที่ Antecedent คือ ประโยคทั้งประโยค เช่น
He is an interesting speaker, and, what is more important, he knows his subject thoroughly.

“Whichever, whatever, whoever” คือ Relative Pronoun รูปผสมใช้ในความหมายเน้นขึ้น เช่น
You can have whatever you want.
Take whichever you like.
She can marry whoever she chooses.

ความสัมพันธ์ภายใน Relative Pronouns
Relative Pronouns จะสัมพันธ์กับตัว Antecedent ในเรื่องของพจน์ และบุรุษ จงสังเกตประโยคต่อไปนี้
1. He waved his hand to Brown, whom he saw buying cigarettes in the shop.
2. He waved his hand to Brown, who, he saw, was buying cigarettes in the shop.

ทั้งสองประโยคเขียนถูกไวยากรณ์ทั้งคู่ ในประโยคที่ 1 “whom” เป็นกรรมของ “saw” และในประโยคที่ 2 “who” เป็นประธานของ “was buying”

ข้อสังเกตอีกอันที่ต้องระวังก็คือ เกี่ยวกับพจน์ของกิริยาของ Subordinate Clause ที่มี “one” ใช้อยู่ใน Main Clause เช่น
This is one of the most difficult questions that have been asked.
That is one of the books that were given to us for study.
Richard is one of the boys who always do good work for me.

After the wedding the bride and the bridegroom left in a car for London which had been given as a present by the bride’s father.

[Update] พจน์ของคำนาม (The Number of Nouns) ภาษาอังกฤษ | คํา นาม นับ ได้ ภาษา อังกฤษ – NATAVIGUIDES

(Formation of the Plural Nouns)
การสร้างรูปนามพหูพจน์โดยทั่วไป ใช้ -S เติมท้ายที่นามเอกพจน์ (Singular Number) เช่น
book – books
day    – days
cat – cats
horse – horses
dog – dogs
judge – judges
bird – birds
mouth – mouths

แต่คำนามต่อไปนี้มีการสร้างรูปพหูพจน์ที่แปลกออกไป แต่ยังสรุปเป็นกฎได้ดังนี้
1) คำที่ลงท้ายด้วย -s, -sh, -ch, -x และ -z ให้เติม -es เช่น
glass – glasses
church – churches
brush – brushes
box    – boxes

2) คำที่ลงท้ายด้วย -o และ -o อยู่หลังพยัญชนะ ให้เติม -es เช่น
negro – negroes
hero – heroes
potato – potatoes
volcano – volcanoes

หมายเหตุ กลุ่มนี้มีคำยกเว้นอยู่หลายคำซึ่งแยกเป็น 2 กรณีดังนี้
1. คำที่ลงท้าย -o แต่ -o อยู่หลังสระ ให้เติม -s เช่น
cuckoo – cuckoos
curio – curios
cameo – cameos
studio – studios
bamboo – bamboos
radio – radios
portfolio – portfolios

2. คำที่รับมาจากภาษาอื่นๆ    เช่น
paino – painos
kilo – kilos
photo – photos
memento – mementos
dynamo –    dynamos
solo    – solos
magneto –    magnetos

3. คำที่ลงท้าย -y และ -y อยู่หลังพยัญชนะให้เปลี่ยน “v” เป็น แล้วเติม -es เช่น
laiy – ladies
army – armies
story – stories
fly    – flies

หมายเหตุ คำที่ลงท้าย – y แต่ – y อยู่หลังสระ (VowelI ให้เติม -s เช่น
valley – valleys
boy    – boys
donkey – donkeys
key    – keys

4) คำที่ลงท้ายด้วย -f หรือ -fe ให้เปลี่ยน -f หรือ -fe เป็น -V แล้วเติม -es เช่น
leaf – leaves
loaf    – loaves
wife – wives
half    – halves
thief – thieves

หมายเหตุ คำต่อไปนี้เป็นคำยกเว้น (Exception) ซึ่งให้เติม -s เท่านั้น คือ
roof     gulf     cliff     reef     proof   chief   hoof   turf   safe   dwarf   grief belief

แต่มีบางคำใช้ได้ 2 รูป คือ
scarfs หรือ scarves
staffs หรือ staves
wharfs หรือ wharves
hoofs หรือ hooves

รูปพหูพจน์นอกเหนือกฎ (Irregular Nouns)
1. มีคำนามอยู่ 8 สำ ใช้วิธีการเปลี่ยนรูปพหูพจน์โดยการเปลี่ยนเสียงสระ (Vowel) ภายในคำ เช่น
man    – men (และรูปผสมของ man คือ gentleman – gentlemen)
woman – women
louse – lice
tooth    – teehth
dormouse – dormice
foot    – feet
goose – geese
mouse  – mice

2. นามบางคำมีรูปเอกพจน์ และพหูพจน์ เป็นรูปเดียวกัน เช่น sheep swine deer fish (และรูป fishes ด้วย) นอกจากนี้ รวมทั้งชื่อของสัตว์ต่างๆ โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่ง เมื่อใช้ในความหมายแสดงการล่า (hunting) หรือเป็นความหมายของเกมส์กีฬาต่างๆ เช่น
To hunt elephant, antelope etc.
To shoot wild duck, grouse etc.

four thousand people, two gross of pencils
three score years, two stone of polatoes
four hundredweight of coal, 10,000 candle-power
20 horse-power, forty head of cattle
two yoke of oxen, และ
2,300,501 = two million three hundred thousand five hundred and one

หมายเหตุ
1. คำเหล่านี้ (ยกเว้น “gross”) จะต้องเติม -s ข้างท้าย เมื่อไม่มีจำนวนเลขอยู่ข้างหน้า เช่น dozens of eggs, hundreds of pounds, scores of times, hundredweights of coal

2. บางครั้งเมื่อมีจำนวนเลขอยู่ข้างหน้า อาจใช้ได้ทั้ง 2 รูป เช่น
He weighs twelve stones. หรือ He weighs twelve stone.
He is six feet tall. หรือ He is six foot tall.

child – children
ox – oxen

ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างประธานกับกริยา (The Agreement between Subject and Verb)

The boy is here. The boys are here.

2. ในกรณีที่ Collective Noun เป็นประธานของประโยค อาจใช้ได้ใน 2 ลักษณะดังนี้
2.1 เมื่อ Collective Noun นั้นมีความหมายเป็นรายบุคคล หรือรายตัว (Individual) จะใช้เป็นนามพหูพจน์ เช่น
The football team are having baths and are then coming back here for tea.

The Government have discussed the matter for a long time but they have shown no signs of reaching agreement.

The family are very pleased about the news of William’s success.

2.2 เมื่อ Collective Noun มีความหมายเป็นกลุ่มหรือมีความหมายรวมบุคคลต่างๆ หรือสิ่งต่างๆ เป็นหน่วยเดียว จะใช้เป็นนามเอกพจน์ เช่น
The football team is playing well.
The Government has decided to pass the bill.
That family is a very happy one.

หมายเหตุ นาม “people, police, public, clergy และ cattle” ใช้กับกิริยาพหูพจน์เสมอ เช่น
The people of Norway are called Norwegians.
The police are making enquiries about the murder.
The public are requested not to leave litter in these woods.

3) ประธาน 2 ตัวขึ้นไปที่เชื่อมด้วย “and” ใช้กิริยาพหูพจน์ เช่น
The boy and his dog are here.

หมายเหตุ ถ้าประธาน 2 ตัวที่เชื่อมด้วย “and” แต่มีความหมายเป็นคนเดียวกัน หรือชุดเดียวกัน ใช้กิริยาเอกพจน์ เช่น
Brown bread and butter is usually eaten with smoked salmen.
Whisky and soda is his favourite drink.
The secretary and accountant of the company was present.

4) ประธานบางคำมีรูปเป็นพหูพจน์แต่เป็นหน่วยของเงิน, หน่วยของเวลา หรือหน่วยของระยะทาง ใช้เป็นเอกพจน์ เช่น
Ten years is a long time.
Five thousand pounds is a lot of money.
Ten miles is a long distance.

5) ชื่อเรื่อง (Title) บางเรื่องอาจมีรูปเป็นพหูพจน์ ใช้เป็นเอกพจน์ เป็นต้น เช่น
‘Modern Painters’ is one of Ruskin’s best known books.

6) ถ้าคำนามพหูพจน์คำหลังเป็นเพียงส่วนหนึ่งของวลี (phrase) (= adj. phrase) ให้ถือคำนามตัวแรกเป็นหลัก (นามตัวแรกเป็นประธานที่แท้จริง) เช่น

7) คำ 2 คำ ที่เชื่อมด้วย or หรือ either…or หรือ neither…nor ให้ถือคำตัวหลังเป็นหลัก เช่น
A cigar on a cigarette is very enjoyable.
Either the teacher or the students are to blame for the bad result.
Neither he nor they are wholly right.

8) ถ้าประธานเป็น Distributive Pronoun (สรรพนามเป็นรายตัว) หรือคำนามที่ใช้ Distributive Adject ขยาย ถือว่าเป็นประธานเอกพจน์ และใช้กับ possessive ที่เป็นเอกพจน์ เช่น
Every boy in the class is present.
Each of the boys has gained a prize.
Neither answer is correct.
Everybody is doing his best.

หมายเหตุ
1. ในภาษาพูดอาจใช้ Possessive ที่เป็นพหูพจน์ในกรณีที่ไม่ระบุเพศแน่นอน เช่น
Everyone was talking at the top of their voices.
When each person comes in, they must show their ticket.

2. ส่วนคำ “none” ใช้ได้ทั้งเอกพจน์ และหหูพจน์ เช่น
None of us is perfect.
None of the children in his class are bored with the Lesson.
I have checked your answers and none of them are correct.

3. คำ “number” ใช้ได้ทั้งเอกพจน์และพหูพจน์โดยสังเกต ดังนี้
3.1 ถ้าใช้ในรูป “The number of + Plural Noun” ใช้เป็นเอกพจน์ (หมายถึงจำนวนหนึ่งของสิ่งต่างๆ) เช่น
The number of students in the class is small.
3.2 ถ้าใช้ในรูป “A number of + Plural Noun” ใช้เป็นพหูพจน์ (a number of = many) เช่น
A number of students were waiting for the lesson to begin.

9) ถ้าใช้ “it” เป็นประธานในลักษณะเน้น (emphatic) กิริยาตามประธาน “it” (it ในที่นี้เป็นประธานมิใช่บุคคล (Impersonal Pronoun)
“Who broke the window?”
“It was Henry and William.”
It is they who are wrong.

10) กิริยาใน Adjective Clause ให้ถือตาม Antecedent เช่น
Ant.
This is one of the best books that have ever been written on the subject.

11) ในประโยคที่ใช้ There + BE = มี ให้ถือประธานที่แท้จริงเป็นหลัก (Adv. + V + S) เช่น
There is a cherry tree in my garden.
There are cherry trees in my garden.

12) คำ Adj. บางคำ เมื่อมี “The” อยู่ข้างหน้า จะใช้เป็นนามพหูพจน์เสมอ เช่น The rich, The poor, The wounded, The dying, The wealthy, The drowning, etc. เช่น
The rich are usually welcome to the society.
