Whare the meaning and the difference between ONE and ONES?
These two words are very pupulare and important to be known by English speakers.
When to use them:
ONE and ONES
are used if it is clear what we are talking about.
are used to avoid repetition.
— I have a phone, but I need another one (another phone).
— I like those shoes, but let’s buy these ones. (these shoes)
Use ONE or ONES to replace the noun you use before.
if NOUN is singular you use ONE (phone)
if NOUN is plural you use ONES (shoes)
What about uncountable noun?
Use ONE and ONES after Adjective
Look at those two girls? Sreyroth is the tall one and Sreynoch is the short one.
Which is your phone, the red one or the black one?
My pens are gone. I need some new ones.
I broke my glasses so I will have to buy some new ones.
Use ONE and ONES after THE
Let’s look at the pictures the one we took in Siem Reap last week.
Look at those kids. Monineat is the one in the red shirt.
I love drinking coconuts, the one from Kampot.
Use ONE, ONES after WHICH
You can borrow my car. Which one do you want?
There are many bags. Which ones are yours?
These glasses are nice. Which ones do you want to buy?
How about UNCOUNTABLE NOUN?
With uncountable nouns we use SOME, ANY or nothing, not ONE or ONES:
I ordered juice, but they did not have any.
If you need some more money, I can lend you some.
Apple juice is cheap, but orange is expensive. (orang juice, nothing after ‘orange’)
