The blessings of God. The subject of God’s blessing upon a man is one of the commonly misunderstood concepts in today’s society. Everyone wants it, the majority pray to receive it, so many give offerings in hope of attracting it, a host of others would cross the highest mountains and deadliest seas to have it in their lives but very few understand what the blessing of God upon a man is.
Many men have derived their understanding and ideology of what the blessing is from the misconceptions that other men have shared with them. This has done less good to the lives of men seeing they misconceive what they earnestly covet. Eventually, when the blessing comes knocking, they turn from it and when the blessing still needs to be sought after, many turn from labouring for it because they have gotten the desire they pursued to satisfy their soulish lusts and thirsts.
What is the blessing? According to yourdictionary.com, a blessing is defined as God’s favour, or a person’s sanction or support, or something you ask God for, or something for which you are grateful. Furthermore, vocabulary.com defines a blessing as a prayer asking for God’s protection, or a little gift from the heavens. In another light, it’s also an act of approval. While this latter definition is used in the contemporary world, the blessings of God are better described by the initial definition.
Every man wants to God’s favour, the support of God is paramount to the success of any project a man embarks on. God’s involvement in a man’s life ultimately becomes the most important factor that guarantees success and so, every person seeks the divine blessing; the blessing that comes from God to man. When a man is blessed, it is man’s assurance that He is a partner with God as touching the engagements of His life.
When God becomes a partner in the engagements of a man’s life, such a man can be assured that he has reasons to rejoice and give God praise. No one else can do things that bewilder another man without the involvement of God. Usually, when a supernatural event occurs and there seems to be no explanation by the wisdom of man, such a situation is described as a miracle. Miracles still happen, God still blesses people, even in these present times.
A quick look at the origin of the word from the scriptures will give us a better understanding of what the word means and ultimately a better understanding of the blessing of God in a man’s life. When the blessing of God is being referred to, what exactly does it infer? Cars? Houses? Riches? Wealth? Health? What exactly can we tie the understanding of the blessing of God to? What best represents the blessings of God?
The first time the word ‘bless’ was used to refer to God’s blessing on an individual is in Genesis 12 when God called Abraham out of his father’s land into a land he was yet to reveal to him. God said He was going to bless Abraham and make him a great nation. Abraham was about to experience the blessing of God as a direct promise.
The root word translated as ‘bless’ in that text was gotten from the Greek word ‘barak’ which means to kneel or to praise. What God was saying in essence was that He would do a work that would make man kneel to Him or praise Him. So, every time a man is blessed by God, it is to the end that praises will rise to God. Man is expected to reverence God whenever he is blessed.
From the beginning of creation, God had blessed man. He declared blessings upon His creation from the point of creation. This means that every man is blessed but the blessing we speak of is the blessing of God specifically communicated to a person or a group of people following God’s decision to do such.
In Genesis 1, scriptures say:
And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
Genesis 1:28 (ESV)
Again, Genesis 12 has this to say:
And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.
Genesis 12:2 (ESV)
The first verse referenced was showing the declaration of God’s blessing upon His creation at the point of creation while the second verse was the declaration of God to make a blessing of Abraham’s life because of His blessing in his life. The blessing of God indeed is the working of God’s ability in a man’s life. The blessing of God is the reality of God’s favour towards a man. When God rewards a man for his obedience to instruction and directions, it comes with a reward also, that is the blessing of God.
The blessing of God is not what a man intentionally sets out to work and qualify himself for.
