The 6 Main Uses of the Word \”Dodgy\” Part 1 of 3: Mark’s English lessons: Aussie slang ESL EFL ELL
Please see my previous lesson, “The 4 main uses of the word crook,” before watching this lesson.
Dodgy has a similar meaning to crook in some ways but can’t always be used in the same manner.
We’ll just look at two of these meanings today and continue with the others meaning in the following two lessons.
1) To be untrustworthy. “That’s guys dodgy, don’t trust him.” Maybe someone walks into the pub and tries to sell you a laptop. (portable computer) He’s says that it “fell out the back of a truck” (In other words, it’s stolen) and that you can have it really cheaply.
This would be a dodgy deal and the guy would probably be a “dodgy smalltime crook.” In some countries the police are corrupt or dodgy. It is common to offer a bribe (money) to avoid paying a fine for example.
Politicians or pollies as they are sometimes referred to, in some countries may also be corrupt. You could say that this person is a “dodgy pollie.” (corrupt politician.)
In Australia, however the vast majority (nearly all) of the politician and police are straight, not dodgy or corrupt. It is an offence to offer a cop (policeperson) a bribe or for them to accept one. Many years ago I saw a sign in the R.T.A (Roads and Traffic Authority) where you can get your driving licence which read, “It is an offence to offer bribes,” which means, “You can’t offer extra money to get favours like getting your driving licence.”
2) As above a person can make a dodgy deal. Maybe the thing that is being sold has been stolen or that in some way the transaction is not honest. “I know a guy who can get you pretty much anything you want really cheaply. He does dodgy deals,” These deals would most likely be dodgy, not honest.
Lesson notes.
Absolutely freezing = very, very cold Gonna = going to
Crook = sick massive = very big crook = criminal
a bloke = an Aussie word for man. “He’s a great bloke,” for example.
A laptop = a portable computer mate = friend wanna = want to
It fell off the back of a truck = an idiom meaning, “it was stolen.”
slightly different = a little bit different scrutinised = watched or checked carefully
If things have been tightened up, they have been made stricter
A cab= a taxi A cabby= a taxi driver A rickshaw = in some countries this is a taxi
A cab rank= the place where the taxis wait to pick up passengers
A bribe = paying someone for a favour the cops = the police
The pollies = The politicians Tend to be = often are
Someone earnings = the money they make. You go to work to earn money
to approach someone = to move forwards towards them
Extra notes.
A removal company may be dodgy. They may be cheap but you ‘get what you pay for.’ My brother and I used to joke about a removals company called, “The Dodgy Brothers.” Our slogan would be, “The Brothers, we’ll get most of your stuff to you most of the time, and in pretty good nick (condition) – apart from a few scratches.
If something is “in good nick” It means, in good condition. For example, my car is in really good nick.” You can only use this for things, you can’t use it to describe a person. For a person you say that they are “in good shape,” which means fit and healthy. You could say, “he’s in really good shape.” You could also use this expression for an animal especially animals that race like horses. The horse “is in really good shape,” for example.
A slogan is a catch phrase that a company uses to make their name known. For example, Nike’s slogan is “Just do it!” A bit like what your mum says to you when she wants you to do something without complaining!
Dennis Skinner kicked out of Commons for calling David Cameron \”dodgy Dave\” – BBC News
Labour MP Dennis Skinner has been suspended from Parliament for the day for calling the Prime Minister \”dodgy Dave\”. He was speaking in the Commons after David Cameron went there to defend his own financial affairs in the wake of the socalled Panama Papers scandal. The Commons Speaker John Bercow asked Dennis Skinner to withdraw his use of the term \”dodgy\” but the MP repeated the word forcing Mr Bercow to eject him from the Commons.
