Hi there! Welcome to Harry’s World of Words and Phrases and English in a Minute. We are going to look at two words: IF and WHETHER. WHETHER spelled W H E T H E R. Students get confused as to when to use them. First of all let me tell you that they can be interchangeable in certain circumstances. And then in other circumstances you have to use them separately. So let me give you some examples. Let’s take my friend Neil. I am not sure WHETHER my friend Neil will call me on Saturday. I am not sure IF my friend Neil is going to call me on Saturday. Exactly the same meaning. Whether he will, if he is going to. OK? But if I give you a choice of two days Saturday or Sunday then we have to change it. And in that circumstances it’s better to use WHETHER. Let me give you the example. Again, my friend Neil. I am not sure WHETHER my friend Neil will call me on Saturday or Sunday. And it means that there’s a chance he will call but we are not sure which day it is going to be. But if I say IF. I’m not sure IF my friend Neil is going to call me on Saturday or Sunday that means it’s unlikely that he’s going to call me on either days. So IF unlikely and WHETHER there’s a possibility. OK?
