In chinese,if a small sentence and another small sentence are not seemly to be two whole sentence,but you also don't think they can be one whole sentence together using "，" to disconnect,you can use "；".
夏天，天是那么热；冬天，天是那么冷。
In summer,the weather is so hot;in winter,the weather is so cold.

For some bizarre, but funny reason, this came to my mind:
Has anyone ever seriously thought about the character, "semi-colon" since "semi" means half, or 50%? Seriously. Why is it called a "semi-colon" ["half-colon"] anyway? The bottom 'comma' portion clearly uses more space than the the upper, 'colon' [plus SPACE] part therefore it's MORE than just 'semi' [half] ? Shouldn't it be more accurate to call it a "comma plus dot," or, a "dotted comma" like we say, "dotted 'i'?"

I don’t know if my teacher and my classmates are just stupid or what. I keep using the semicolon EXACTLY like in this video, but every time I do use it; I get the worst mark possible.

An easier understanding is to use it when you are talking about the first thing you said. Example:
I have an eraser; I use it for erasing off pencil marks.

James ran 12KM; Mary was delighted.

You can also use it if you are going to use "however" in a middle of a sentence.
Example:

James played diligently in the match; however, he was not happy with the results.
