There are so many ways to rewrite these sentences. Don't get stuck on trying one way, you can switch it and people will read it without issues.

In the clause " both of whom smoke " We use " whom" not " who " simply because we have a preposition, so after prepositions we normally have object pronouns not subject pronouns.
