With a data validation drop down list, you can make it easy to enter data, and prevent invalid data.
You can also create dependent drop down list select an item from the first list, and the second drop down only shows the related items.
Problems can occur though, if someone goes back to the first list, and changes it. Then, the first and second selections are mismatched for example, Fruit is the first choice, and cabbage is selected in the second column.
To block changes to the first list, you can change the data validation formula, so the list does not appear unless the second cell is empty.
